0192 KING'S INDIAN ATTACK (ECO C44f)
Wendy's XXVII, 8-1-01, Charlotte, NC
Paul Walker (1083)  Robert Broadbent (501)
1.e4 Nf6 2.d3 Nc6 3.Nf3 e5 4.g3 Be7 5.Bg2 O-O 6.O-O Bc5 {I play 7. Nbd2, but 7.Nxe5 Nxe5 8. d5 looks a little interesting too. Not much better, but maybe a little.} 7.Nbd2 Ng4 {I don't know why I'm so afraid of trading myf pawn and rook for Robert's knight and bishop. It would get rid of his two most developed pieces and open the f file for my heavy pieces. This fear made me degrade my position over the next seven moves!} 8.Qe2 d6 9.h4 Bd4 {As far as I can tell, Bd4 is a wasted move.} 10.c3 Bb6 11.Nc4 Bc5 {Here I should probably have pushed the bishop with b4, and followed with a4 for a queenside storm, but I still fear the trade. Instead I offer my well-placed bishop for his less effective one.} 12.Be3 Bxe3 13.Nxe3 Nxe3 14.fxe3 {fxe3 was not a very inspired move...Qxe3 may have been a little better, but I wanted to open the f file for my heavy pieces} 14...Bg4 15.Kh2 h6 {Robert probably should have tried e5 instead and attacked my weak pawn structure.} 16.Qf2 Re8 17.Bh3 Bxh3 18.Kxh3 Qc8+ {Qd7+ would have been better, covering the 7th rank.} 19.Kh2 Re6 20.h5 g5? {I missed Nxg5! at this point, which would have won me a pawn at least.} 21. hxg6 fxg6 22.Ng5 {Ahhh, a dangerous move for Robert. His best move is also the only move that preserves his advantage...Re7. But that knight is just too
enticing for him.} 22...hxg5?? {Mate in 4! I had attended a lecture on opening and closing ranks and files just last night, so I knew the knight sac was right. Notice the open f and h files and the 7th rank?} 23.Qf7+ Kh8 24.Kg2 Qg8
25.Rh1+ Qh7 26.Rxh7# {White mates} 1-0 (Notes by Walker)
