Subject: Some results from this past weekendLeland: I'm not all that sure what happened to most people in the sections
outside of the open, but I can at least give you the following:
Jerome DeBell scored 3.5/5 (I know he beat Daniel Garrett Friday night, but
otherwise, not sure who his opponents were)
Doug Millsaps scored 0/3 and dropped out after that.
Otherwise, the rest is from the open section:
For games in which I'm not sure who they faced, I'm sure that player would
be able to tell you on Wednesday.
Daniel Liu scored 2.5: ($25 for 6-way tie for 3rd-4th in U2200 Class
Prize)
Round 1: lost to Neal Harris (Via getting his Queen trapped in under
20 moves. Sounds like a game you had once as I recall)
Round 2: full point bye
Round 3: draw to John Bidwell
Round 4: half point bye
Round 5: draw to Fred Kleist
Daniel Tapia scored 2.5: ($25 for 6-way tie for 3rd-4th in U2200 Class
Prize)
Round 1: draw to Adam Caveney (Who by the way got 1st in U2200 with
3.5, winning his final round against Neal Harris while I could only get the
draw against Frankie)
Round 2: beat Arthur Allen
Round 3: lost, don't recall to who
Round 4: lost, don't recall to who
Round 5: Mated John Bidwell (2200) with KBN vs K (Which started out
K+B+N vs K+3P)
Frankie Newton scored 3: ($50 for 2-way tie for 4th in Open)
Round 1: draw to Alan Patrick (Though Alan Patrick did have a win in
the Q+P ending that I showed him afterwards)
Round 2: beat John Smithwick
Round 3: won, though not sure against who.
Round 4: lost to Julio Somebody. Don't know his last name. The male
of the 2 GMs that visited the CCC that one night. (Rating over 2500)
Round 5: draw to Patrick McCartney
Patrick McCartney scored 3: ($150 for sole 2nd in U2200 Class Prize)
Round 1: beat John Bidwell
Round 2: lost to Carlos Perdomo (2463)
Round 3: draw to Neal Harris (Though I missed the win in the
completely Won K+P ending I achieved due to tactical mate threats over the
course of the game)
Round 4: full point bye (Was scheduled to play Black against Daniel
Liu, but they misplaced their note that he had a Half-Point bye round 4.)
Round 5: draw to Frankie Newton
Overall, I'd say Charlotte did quite well, including a 1700 player scoring
2.5 in the open section. (Of course, this is based on not knowing what
people like Brandon Brown and Alphonse Ashamalla did, and whoever else was
there that I didn't notice. Had no time to worry about that stuff when
playing in the open section. A very different beast than the U2000 I
noticed).
A number of upsets as you can see were pulled by Charlotte players,
including Dan Liu drawing a 2200, Daniel Tapia drawing a 2150 (With Black I
may add. All the other upsets aside from my draw to Frankie were with the
advantage of having White.) and beating a 2100 and a 2200, and myself
beating a 2200, and drawing twice to 2200s. Frankie gave Julio a run for
his money, but came out empty.
An endgame lesson to all: Even what appears to be the simplest endgame is
still not simple, and time must be taken to figure everything out. The
following was my position against Neal Harris mentioned above after an
extremely tactical and complicated middlegame in the third round that I
should have won (I was White).WK on e4
WP on a4
WP on b3
WP on g4
WP on h2
BK on d6
BP on a5
BP on c5
BP on g5
BP on h6White to move and win. I played 44.Kf5?? which only drew to 44...Kd5
45.Kg6 Kd4 46.Kxh6 Kc3 47.Kxg5 Kxb3 48.Kh5 (48.h4?? -+) c4 49.g5 c3 50.g6
c2 51.g7 c1=Q 52.g8=Q+ Kxa4 53.Qe8+ Kb4 54.Qb8+ Ka4 55.Qe8+ Kb4 56.Qb8+ Ka4
57.Qe8+ Draw.The winning move is 44.Kd3!!, then 44...Kd5 45.Kc3 Kd6 (The pawn race with
45...Ke4 fails for Black) 46.Kc4 Kc6 47.h3! and Black's in Zugzwang.
