Charlotte Winter Open A Rousing Success! Great Fun for Young and Old - And Parents, Too!
Charlotte, NC 12-28-13:  A moderately strong turnout of 41 players from all age groups and skill levels gathered on the 7th floor of the Dowd "Y" in order to participate in the 1st Charlotte Winter Open! This experimental event included some of the strongest players in the state as well as a full contingent of scholastic players! A low entry fee of $20 and equal cash prizes in each section (Charlotte Chess Network always returns 75%) produced many smiling faces from the 14 cash prize winners! Everyone welcomed the return of WFM Jenny "Goldilocks" Leveikina (2060) who is visiting from Germany with friend Expert Wil "Mayhem" Mahan (2159) from Seagrove, NC. -- In the Carlsen Section, Mahan yielded a 17 move Draw to NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2011) in Rd:1 (See Game 1247) before dispatching of Dr. Xiaodong Jin (1788) in Rd:2 and NM Pat "Kahn" Sciacca (2103) in the final round (See Game 1248) to finish =1st-2nd Place with 16 year old Expert Kevin Chen (2075) who defeated Cameron Chandler (1877) in Rd:1, Drew Sciacca in Rd:2 and knocked off Fuerstman in the final round each scoring 2.5-.5 and winning $75. For NMLF's Rd:2 encounter with Jenny (See Game 1246). In the Aronian Section, Tony "Tiger" Hicks (1740) clicked off wins against Mikey "Fox" Trott (1452), Damon "Omen" Smith (1764) and Ishaan Maitra (1730) to finish clear 1st Place with 3-0 and pocket $100! Equal 2nd-5th were Victor Huaquin, Ian Haigler, Ishaan Maitra and Damon Smith each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Nakamura Section, Virginia organizer Bob Mahan (1491) finished =1st-2nd Place with Locksley Young (1468) each scoring 2.5-.5 and collecting $75. And, finally, in the Kramnik Section, after CCC's Rich "Alert" Trela (1041) defeated 3 scholastic players, he promptly returned his $100 cash prize to be distributed among the other winners! Equal 2nd-5th were Rolondo
Dorbecker, Neil Deshpande, Benaiah Howell and Joseph Moore each with 2-1 winning $37.50. Said Rich, "I totally enjoyed playing with some pretty strong young students of the game!"
(Yes, people, there are still a few good guys left in the world!). Thanks to his meticulous attention to detail, NM Shawn Pealer made sure that the pairings were promptly posted allowing each round to get off without a hitch. After the youngsters settled down, as the rounds wore on, you could hear a pin drop! Many parents lounged in the foyer to dine, socialize, work on their computers and console their wounded warriors... others placed their cash prizes into safe keeping! LOL I can sincerely say that this was the most enjoyable chess event I've been to in some time. (We are considering changing the CCC Saturday format to include a special "Scholastic Section!") Kudoes to Shawn for his success in advertising and recruiting. For complete results see "Crosstable." Next CCC Saturday event, Knights Templar VII, February 1. Hope to see you there! Fuerstman assisted.
> Note: The time control for all Sections is now G90 <
( Black pieces decide whether or not to use "Time Delay")

Sturman Takes Top Honors; Lucas "B"; Nichols "C"; Fletcher Lower Section of Skyland 50
Charlotte, NC 12-26-13:  A grand total of 30 of the most congenial chess players from 2 states converged upon this gastro- nomical paradise more commonly know as the Skyland Family Restaurant in order to participate in Skyland 50. (CCC members got very comfortable sitting in full size tables and chairs while being catered to by our own personal waitress, Cindy. Most enjoyed a generously portioned home style meal for a ridiculously low price ($6.95!) drank hot coffee and other beverages, analyzed on our demo board and monitored the giant flat screen TV with the sound turned off; Skyland stays open 24 hours!) In the Top Section, Mark "Twain" Sturman (1826) endured a Rook sac offered by superhero Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1912) and went on to win to finish clear 1st Place with 2.5-2.5. Meanwhile, Team Columbia's Expert Keith "Chucky" Eubanks (2003) squared off against Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2086) only to gradually assume a middle game advantage and ultimately win while teammate Expert James "Big" Mac Dougall (2004) promptly dispatched of a "still under the weather" pride of Mint Hill, Ex-member of the NCCA Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2038). In addition, "Judge" Slobodan Sinanovic (1811) got by Dawuud Richards (1645).  In the "B" Section, Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1812) won a hotly contested encounter with Tony "Tiger" Hicks (1657) to finish clear 1st Place with 4-1 and win FREE Entry into Skyland 51. In the "C" Section, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1575) split the point with Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1617) to finish clear 1st Place with 4.5-.5 and win FREE Entry into Skyland 51. In addition, 2013 CCC Player of the Year, Mikey "Fox" Trott (1508) made peace with Sam Kumar (1312). In the Lower Section, Troy "Mother" Fletcher (1338) got tripped up by Eric "Truth" Hartung (1327) but still finished clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5. In order to observe all results see "Current Crosstable."  McCartney assisted. The facility was great and everybody was happy! We hope more players will join us next Thursday to dine, socialize and play one rated game of chess at 7:45pm sharp! Everyone is welcome. Long live the CCC!
