"Dr. Al" Spotted in Mooreville, NC; Alive and Well!!
Mooreville, NC 4-26-02: After receiving an invitation from CCC member Mike Lipkin, I ventured to Mooreville (not Mooresville) to meet up with my old friend, Dr. Alan H. Lipkin, Phd for an invitational round robin speed tournament. Included were son Mike and Paul Calloway.  For those of you who are not old enough to remember, Dr. Al, many times officer of the NCCA, founded the Laurence Phefferkorn Open or "LPO" in 1973. Both Calloway (14 years old at the time)  and I played in the very first one. The event became bigger each year drawing many Grandmasters for large guaranteed prizes. (A few years ago, Al sold the rights to the tournament to Georgia chess promoter Thad Rodgers.) Now, 57 years old, Al resides in California where he is a day trader. A pleasant evening was had by all. Finish in order of score: Fuerstman, Calloway, Lipkin, Lipkin. LF
