I was very
disappointed to "just" learn of the passing of Julie Schmidt.
Back in the 70's, "Team Schmidt" relocated to the
triangle area to work and raise their family in North
Carolina. Dr. Bernard
Schmidt, a college professor, was already a
strong Expert who quickly proved himself among his
peers. Wife Joan,
a strong Class "A" player in her own right, was the
matriarch who attempted to launch her two children, Julie and David, in the
right direction. David did become an Expert. But, Julie
seemed to enjoy the social aspects of tournament play
more so than the technical ones. For years, their entire
family would arrive at one tournament or another to
compete. Bubbly teenager Julie could always be seen
bouncing from one group of friends to another; always
laughing and having fun! She loved everyone, and
everyone loved her... For many years, the Schmidt's were
welcome fixtures on the North Carolina chess scene. A few years ago, Bernie passed away leaving a void in the NC chess arena. But, an even more unfortunate tragedy followed. Last year, though stricken with MS, a very brave Julie and her husband attempted to have a child. During this process, her heart failed and she passed away. My personal condolences go out to mama Joan. My fond memories of your family will live on forever. God bless you NM Leland Fuerstman |
