Open Apology to NCCA President Abate
by NM Leland Fuerstman

In a recent message posted on the CCC Message Board, Msg483, "NCCA Rapidly Disintegrating," this Editor "re-published" a quote that was used by a previous NCCA officer from a message which was posted on the NCCA Forum. In her message, she stated that NCCA President Rudy Abate had referred to chess as "just a silly game." I have since learned that this quote was apparently taken out of context. In a recent phone conversation, President Abate reiterated that he was referring to the statement that "compared the hardships endured by our military troops who are risking their lives in the middle east, chess is just a 'silly' game." Being a Vietnam veteran myself, I am well aware of the unselfish personal sacrifice provided by our heroes of freedom. Therefore, I apologize for using the quote without having verified it first.

In addition, it had been briefly stated in a message, "but promptly removed," that in order to achieve his
Senior Tournament Director's status, Abate had submitted tournaments "in which he had participated in all five rounds" as evidence of Director's experience?!" and that the matter
was being "investigated" by the USCF. Any USCF member has the right to question the processes by which such Titles are bestowed. Another popular North Carolina TD and I both believe that a "Chief Tournament Director" should concentrate all of his efforts on Directing rather than playing; particularly in a section of 100 players?! Curiously enough, the USCF doesn't seem to be too concerned about it?! However, the facts are accurate.

Finally, a few readers seem to think that it was disparaging to denigrate Mr. Abate for his low chess rating? That was certainly not my intention. However, others believe that skill level and experience are important in making state level decisions. And, as everyone at the Charlotte Chess Club or any other event which I have ever directed knows, I always treat every member in a friendly manner, with mutual respect, regardless of his rating! I prefer judging people, not by what they say, but by what they do...

By the way, since you're not doing anything on the Saturday after Thanksgiving anyway, why not come to Charlotte and participate in Reserve Angel VIII on November 24 at the Dowd YMCA. Hope to see you there!
