NEWS & VIEWS 1-13-05
Newton
Wins Top;
Katz 5-0 in "B"; Hofer,
Singleton "C"; Nichols, McLaughlin Lower Section of
Wendy's LXII
Charlotte,
NC 1-12-05: A grand total of 49 of the Metrolina
area's most intense energumens
(including 30 players in the final round)
converged upon this arena of mental
jousters more commonly known as Wendy's in order to
participate in Wendy's LXII. In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, 2004 CCC Player of the Year, 2004 NC Invitational Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2282) agreed to a friendly
but hard fought draw with the CCC's #3 player, 2004 NC Scholastic Champion, CCC Scholastic Player of the Year, NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2201) to take clear 1st Place with 4-1 and
collect $100
cash. (There
have been a total of 62
Wendy's 5 round events - Newton
has won 39 of them!)
Meanwhile, 2004 CCC "A" Player
of the Year, Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2033) chopped down Tarokh
"the Oak" Taefi (1841) to share =2nd-3rd Place
with, Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it"s a plane, it's Superman disguised as mild
mannered reporter Clarke
"Kent" Brosi (1803) who upset
NM Leland "El-moron" Fuerstman (2035) each with 3 points. In
addition, Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1911) survived a
double-edged melee versus the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker
(1843). In the "B" Section, 2004 CCC "D" Player of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year Marty "Fritz" Katz (1640)
(who may soon be an "A" player after his newly calculated rating of 1715!) out maneuvered
Walter "Mitty" Overman (1665) to take clear 1st Place with a perfect 5-0! and "Free Entry"
into Caribou I this Saturday, Jan 15 at Caribou
Coffee in the Park Rd. Shopping Center. In addition, the good
Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1771) performed
questionable surgery on cadaver Jackie "Bman" Ryan (1711) while Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1617) got by Viktor "the Mad
Russian" Ozherelyev (1613) who was overruled
by this USCF Senior Tournament Director after he attempted to capture a
pawn en passant with his King!!? LOL.
Also, 2004 CCC "C" Player of
the Year Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1644) split the point with
"Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) and NCCA Vice President Randy "Wheels" Wheeless (1660) fired Donald "Trump" Hofer (1522).
In the "C" Section, despite
the fact that he lost Rd:5, Hofer still shared =1st-2nd Place with Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1465) who breached the barrels of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin
(1532) each with 3.5-1.5. In
addition, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1568) suffered a severe "cymbals to the
ears" injury at the hands of CCC returnee Octavius "You must" Obey (1399). In the Lower Section, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1260) and Duncan "Doughnuts" McLaughlin (1005) shared =1st-2nd Place with 3 points
each. All

Tapia, Mabe, Trower Share Top
Honors; Holmes, Keller Lower Section of Caribou I
Charlotte
NC 1-15-05: A happy group of 21 of the Metrolina area's most
avid competitors downed their cappucino and expresso coffee, wiped the
whipped cream off their mustaches and participated
in Caribou I. Though
the playing area was limited
and the tables were a bit small, the
atmosphere was pleasant and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the
event. (Regardless, this was only a
temporary venue; next month our new location will be ready!)
In the Top Section, the CCC's #3 player, 2004 NC Scholastic Champion, 2004 CCC Scholastic Player of the Year NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2201) who just unvailed his
new website at: www.danieltapia.com,
yielded a Draw to Soviet Grandmaster Gennady
Brazhnikov (1856) in Rd:1
and then reeled off successive wins against Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi
(1829) and Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1941)
to share =1st-3rd Place with 2004 CCC Expert of the Year Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2102) who defeated Matthew
"Hoekstra" Green (1856), Kenneth "the Terrible" Ivens (1807) and agreed
to a Grandmaster Draw with Expert Todd
"Squirrel" Trower (2058)
who chopped down Taefi and Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1759).
(Slobodan scored 2-1...Good
luck next week in surgery at Mercy Hospital...get well
soon!!)
Each scored 2.5-5
and
took home $50
cash. In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd Place was shared
by Laurin "Killer" Keller (1638) and
Dr. Gilbert "Sherlock" Holmes (1746) each with 2.5-.5
winning $75.
See
(Crosstable) for complete results. Next Saturday 3 rounder February 19.
The
new location will soon be announced! (Fuerstman directed) LF
