Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to    everyone out there in cyberspace, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered into the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, I will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the touch of a button! We welcome your comments and contributions

CCC NEWS &VIEWS 1-27-00

By NM Leland Fuerstman

Fuerstman Keeps Pace with Daniel and Newton For Lead In Wendy's XI; Millsaps Stops Ashamalla; "Flash"Gordon Perfect in Lower Section
Neither rain, nor sleet, nor ice, nor snow could prevent at least 30 of our chess energumens from parking their snow-plows and competing in Rd:4 of Wendy's XI. (Sometimes I get the feeling that these guys would show up during a hurricane, tornado or even nuclear attack to play chess!!) In the Top Section, leader Gary Newsom's (1907) position fell through the ice and into the freezing lake as CCC Youthful Offender Justin Daniel (2018) grabbed a share of the lead with 3-1. Keeping stride while attempting to secure his unprecedented 4th Club Title in succession, NM Leland Fuerstman (2041) smashed the snowman to the ground as he destroyed NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2254) with the rarely played Frankenstein-Dracula variation of the Vienna Game! (See Game 0088)  (After last week's ghastley loss to Newsom, Fuerstman realized the importance of "not losing one's mojo" just prior to competition).A promising R & P adjournment against NM Daniel Liu (2000) will probably elevate CCC Favorite Son William F. "Frankie" Newton II (2188) to the leaders platform. Also, in the Top Section, PatrickMcCartney (1761) with the Black pieces, corralled David Jaap's (1821) Queen while Tarokh Taefi (1791) handled "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1631). The final round should prove to be very interesting. In the Middle Section, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla's (1250) incredible streak of 8 wins finally came to an end at the hands of spoiler Douglas "Sky" Millsaps (1563) while also with the Black pieces, Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1641) and Mike Isner (1499) defeated CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas (1646) and Andras Bader (1600) respectively. In addition, Algie Clyburn (1599) took care of Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1578)  In the Lower Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1302) successfully defended against Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1128) to lead the section with a perfect 4-0! (Hey Dude; you should have played the Queen of Cups!) Other Lower Section winners were: Slobodan Sinanovic, Brandon Brown, and Helton Clavijo. For all results see (Current Crosstable) See ya' Saturday at Denny's!

CCC Continues to Seek New Location; John's Restaurant Just Too Far Away
Over the past two months, officials of the Charlotte Chess Club have been searching for a new "temporary" home.  Though John's Restaurant would have been a perfect facility for our purposes, ie. modern, comfortable individually lighted booths, room for 100 players, open till 11:00pm, great menu, friendly, "quiet" employees, direct parking, etc. the facility was located "off the beaten path."  What we have negotiated, however, is the use of the Ole Smokehouse Dining Room on Montford Dr. (Off Park Rd) for Saturday tournaments.  Hopefully, if they like us, we will try to talk them into allowing us to use  it on Wednesday evenings as well. But, for now our first tournament has been planned for Saturday, February 26.  (See Upcoming Events) See ya' there! LF
Liu Captures Denny's A-1 Title; Dr. Sztyber Performs Surgery on Lower Section

A dozen of the Metrolina area's most competitive chessplayers installed chains on their tires, caravaned to Ft. Mill, SC, and  participated in Denny's A-1 on Super Bowl Saturday! In the Top Section, NM Daniel Liu (2000) pocketed $60 after having dispatched of David Jaap (1821) and Gary Newsom (1914) before drawing his final round against Patrick McCartney (1783).  (See Game 0089) Equal 2nd-3rd winning $15 each were Gary Newsom (1914) and PatrickMcCartney (1783) who each score 2-1.  In the Lower Section, Dr. Gerard Sztyber (1513), after having driven all the way from Alabama, preformed various procedures on Don Norwood, Mike Isner, and Rob Morse to score a perfect 3-0 and carry home $60 (Please give Governor Wallace my regards...) Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 and winning $15 were Jerome DeBell and Rob Morse. (Our next 3-round Saturday tournament will be held at "The Ole Smokehouse Dining Room" on Montford Dr. (Off Park. Rd.) on Feb. 26). Fuerstman directed.
