Happy New Year!
Wendy's Restaurant
434 S. Independence Blvd.
Is still the Home of
the Charlotte Chess Club!!
We're
back, and we're mad!? (A few heard Mr. Sam profoundly exclaim, "the grass
always looks greener on the other side of the fence!") Well, we didn't
even get a chance to "taste" the grass as the two silent partners of the
owner/manager of Athens Restaurant nixed our using their facility before
we had a chance to... (Wow, they must have done some research!!?) But,
alas, I haven't stopped looking. LF

Wendy's XI Gets Underway; Trower Upsets NM Wells;
Ashamalla's Debut in Middle Section Astonishes Crowd!
Thirty bleary-eyed,
hung-over, New Year's Eve casualties first realized that they were
still alive, and then pulled themselves away from their respective commodes
in order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's XI. In the Top
Section,
top seed NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2257) suffered his third consecutive
loss as he was bested by shooting star Todd "Flowers" Trower (1901).
(See
Game 0081)
A Phi Beta Kappa Rhoades Scholar currently on winter break, Trower
is a student at Harvard University with a double major in Medicine and
Law...(and Minors in face painting and body piercing!!? No, really,
he says he likes girls!) Also in the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son
Expert William F. "Frankie" Newton II (2188)
manhandled Jesse Liu (1890) (See Game 0082)
while
NM
Leland Fuerstman (2031) exacted quick revenge with the Black
pieces against Patrick McCartney (1861). In addition, Expert Justin
Daniel (2018) bested Jamie McGavran (1851), Gary Newsom (1907)
survived a lively encounter with Tarokh Taefi (1791) and David Jaap (1864)
drew with NM Daniel Liu (2000). In the Middle Section,
Jerome
"Bouncer" DeBell (1578) dispatched of Mike Isner (1499) while
newcomer to the section Alphonse Ashamalla (1250) dazzled the crowd
by upsetting Randy Hight (1551) with a cute 9 move miniature! (See
Game 0079) In the Lower Section,
Brandon Brown, Timothy Ruffin, Helton Clavijo, Kevin Smith, Lee "R&Bman"
Richardson, Michael "You know you make me wanna" Shoup and
John Meyer scored the first round point. For all results see (Current
Crosstable). See ya' Friday evening at Denny's!
Klein, Trower Win Denny's II "Quick Chess"
Nine night-owls
braved
the cold (I'm talking about "in the restaurant") as well as the
profound oder of natural gas and competed in Denny's
II which
took place the evening of January 7. NM Mike Klein defeated
Gil Holmes and NM Daniel Liu in rounds 1 & 2 while Todd "Flower
Power" Trower took care of Patrick McCartney and NM Leland Fuerstman
before agreeing to a quick draw. Each champion pocketed $60. Fuerstman
directed.
Fuerstman and Trower Capture Midtown XXVI Title;
(McCartney Lays "Goose-Egg")
Thirteen
chessplayers dressed in Santa outfits shared
the yuletide spirit as they competed in the final CCC 3 rounder of the
Millennium. In the Top
Section, NM Leland Fuerstman
(2004) bounced
back from his horriffic loss of the preceeding Wednesday to equal the score
of Todd "Flowers" Trower (1964) who had upset CCC favorite son
William F. "Frankie" Newton II (2160) in Rd:2.
Each scored 2.5-.5 and took home $60. In the Lower Section,
Anthony
Smith (1137) unwrapped three early Christmas gifts scoring 3-0 and
winning $40. In deference to Mr. McCartney, he played a tough schedule
and only lost to one lower rated player. Fuerstman directed.

CCC Warriors Dominate State Championship;
Lovelace and McCartney Share Under 2000 Title; NM Larry Tapper Wins State
Title
The joyride
came to an end when, in the final round of the North Carolina
State Championship, after having amassed 3 points which included a
15 move "quicky" over NM Neal Harris and a Draw against SM Jonathan Schroer
(See
Game 0072), CCC "Favorite Son" Expert Frankie
Newton (2145) came
face to face with "Ex-CCC Favorite Son" NM Matthew Hoekstra (2250).
With the State Title in his sights, fatigue, the clock and the relentless
determination of his opponent left Frankie dreaming of what might have
been. Still a darn good showing for the aspiring Master; It's only a matter
of time! Also, in the Championship Section, NM Daniel Liu (2050) scored
2.5-2.5.
In the Under 2000 Section Randy Lovelace (2002)
and Patrick McCartney (1771) yielded only two draws each as they
tied for 1st-4th with 2 out-of-staters?!? all with 4-1.
In the Under 1600 Section Jerome DeBell
(1529) grabbed a share of 3rd place with a 4-1 result while Carl McKern
(1500) scored 3-2.

Daniel Youngest Expert In North Carolina
Congratulations
are in order for CCC member Justin Daniel who, at the tender
age of 15 has, according to the USCF December Rating
Supplement,
achieved the Title of Expert with a published rating of 2019. Justin,
who recently relocated from Charleston, S.C.with his father, Kevin
and family, is a highly motivated and intellectually stimulated "home taught"
student. (Where have we seen this before?) His recent results at
the Charlotte Chess Club include wins over NM Leland Fuerstman (2018) and
Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2190). We are honored to have such an extremely
talented and polite young man in our mix. Watch out Frankie!! Here comes
Justin!!!
