NEWS & VIEWS 2-17-05
Newton Wins 40th
Wendy's Title!; Jivan
"B"; Hofer "C"; Xin Lower Section of Wendy's LXIII
Charlotte,
NC 2-16-05:
A grand total of 48 of the Metrolina
area's most creative genii converged upon this factory where chess
brilliancies are produced more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Wendy's LXIII.
In the Top Section, though he got off to a
dubious start with a rare loss to Expert Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer (2048) in Rd:1, the CCC's #2 player, 2004 CCC Player of the Year, NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2292) bounced back with a decisive victory over the CCC's #3 player,
threepeat NC Scholastic Champion, 2004 CCC Scholastic Player of the Year, NM Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2197) in the ultimate round to score 3.5-1.5 and
take the clear 1st Place prize
of $100.00
cash! (which he forgot
to collect). ("I'm
sorry I didn't collect the 100 dollars, I was only thinking about
trying to win the title, I forgot about the money. Here is
the game
from Wednesday night." FN (See Game 0459)
Meanwhile, NM Leland "Padrone" Fuerstman (2000),
(who just returned from Charleston
where he and team mate Tapia
both scored 4.5-.5
and tied for =1st-3rd with SM Emory Tate (2408) each winning $285!),
bounced back from back to back losses to #1 & #2 with a nifty
"Dragon" win over Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800) to finish =2nd-3rd with Tapia with 3-2 (See Game 0458). (Guys, our top players
will tell you, the toughest competition in the South is found right
here at the CCC!!). In addition, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1801) outplayed NC Class "A"
icon Mike McHale (1857) while Ken
"the Terrible" Ivens (1807)
beat down "Sponge" Bob Moore (1713). In the "B" Section, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1606) was only able to Draw
with NCCA Vice President Randy "Wheels" Wheeless (1660) but still finished
clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.
Second in the section was Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1615) who
defeated Walter "Mitty" Overman (1665) and
finished with 3-2.
In the "C" Section,
Donald "Trump" Hofer (1522) outplayed and then
fired Octavius "O-O" Obey (1399) to take clear 1st Place with 4.5-.5 and
win Free

Tapia, McCartney
Share Top Honors; Thiede Lower Section of "Billy's I"
Charlotte
NC 2-19-05: A small group of 16 happy competitors
surrounded by stock car memorabelia, reported to our new
location and participated in Billy's I.
Almost everyone, to a man, thoroughly enjoyed the
atmosphere, friendly
and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably
priced cuisine and modern design of the recently renovated facility.
(Playing in a completely silent, upstairs private room seems to be a
rarity around here ). In
the Top Section, =1st-2nd Place was
taken by the CCC's #3
player, 2004
NC
Scholastic Champion, 2004
CCC Scholastic Player
of the Year NM Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2201) who
just unvailed his new website at www.danieltapia.
com, posting his second tournament
victory in as many weekends with a Rd:1
victory over Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800), a Rd:2 rout of Matthew "Hoekstra"
Green (1881) and a Rd:3
grandmaster Draw with co-champion Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1941). McCartney tamed Jerome
"Cookiemonster" DeBell (1667) in Rd:1
and upset NM Leland "El Moron" Fuerstman (2000) in Rd:2. Each scored 2.5-.5 and
pocketed $75. In the Lower Section, 13 year old Eric-Henning Thiede (1358) scored 2.5-.5 and
carried home the 1st Place
prize of $60.
Equal 2nd-3rd Place with 2-1 was
shared by Donald "Trump" Hofer (1522) and Jeff McAdams (1537) of Greensboro
each winning $15.
To observe all results see (Crosstable). See you at Billy's II, March 19. |
