"Outlaw" Wins Adjournment; Takes Lead - A. Clontz 3-0 in Lower Section of Wendy's XIII - 7:30pm Starting Time Effective!
One score and one-half dozen "legends in their own mind" forewent sitting as spectators and watching people bounce a ball all evening and instead chose to participate in Rd:3 of Wendy's XIII. In the Top Section, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2170)  ran roughshod over NM Leland Fuerstman's (2084) adjourned position shortly after it's resumption to score the full point and lead the tournament with 2-0. The "Outlaw's"  lively Rd: 3 encounter with CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2015) ended with a perpetual check draw and a half-point lead in the tournament. Also, in the Top Section, newly crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2203) bested NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2032) while NM Leland Fuerstman (2084) was nicked for a draw by Patrick McCartney (1879).  In the Cruiserweight Division, thanks to our new 7:30pm starting time, the encounter between Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1531) and Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc." Pietras (1770) was the only adjourned game of the evening! In the Middle Section, Slobodan "Monte" Sinanovic (1579) won a K & P ending against CCC Website Adviser Carl McKern (1522) while with the Black pieces, "Iron" Mike Isner (1465) handled Darrell Spencer (1364). In the Lower Section, 15 year old Adam Clontz (1149) logged in his 5th consecutive win in CCC competition with a convincing win over Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1390) to lead with a perfect 3-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Don Norwood, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Jim "High-hat" Ulaky, Brandon Brown and Helton Clavijo. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." Remember: The Wednesday evening round now begins at 7:30pm sharp! Be there!!

"Outlaw" Survives Ambush!  Gets Away With the Cash! - B.Brown, D. Spencer & "Windy" Gatlin Share Honors in Lower Section of Smokehouse II
Nineteen vigilantes posing as chess players fought it out in Smokehouse II on March 18. In the Top Section, which featured the participation of 4 Masters, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2199) dispatched of NM Daniel Liu (2009) in Rd:1 before encountering CCC Favorite Son 16 year old Expert Justin Daniel (2036). During the time scramble of that Rd:2 battle, it appeared to some spectators, including this Senior TD, that the good "Outlaw" had executed a move and "possibly" released his hand from the piece before placing it on another square?! However, his courteous opponent, not being absolutely certain, did not formally protest and continued play, only minutes later to lose. Wells' Rd:3 contest with newly crowned National Master William "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2201) featured  a critical time scramble and a Queen sacrifice. The resulting unbalanced position ended in the second time control with an agreement of draw. The "Outlaw's score of 2.5-.5 earned him clear 1st Place honors and $80. Second thru 4th with 2-1 and taking home $13. were NM Frankie Newton (2201), Justin Daniel (2036) and 8th seed Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1500) who upset NM Daniel Liu (2009) and Patrick McCartney (1860) in Rds:2 & 3 respectively. Lower Section honors were shared by Winfred "Windy" Gatlin (Unr), Brandon Brown (1195) and Darrell Spencer (1364) each scoring 2.5-.5 and winning $50. Fuerstman directed.

Newton Draws GM Shabalov (2623), Crushes IM Sevillano (2547) at Land of the Sky!
A roar of applause and cheers filled the room as "the Gladiator" entered...for, he had once again, proven himself in battle, "beyond the call of duty."  This time, William F. Frankie "the Gladiator" Newton II (2188) asked no quarter and yielded none after employing the "Swiss Gambit" in Rd:1 of the Land of the Sky.  In Rd:2 he handily defeated Jeffery Pennig (1947) and was thusly paired with one of the highest rated active players in the U.S., International Grandmaster Alex Shabalov (2623) whom he Drew! (See Game 0094)Round 4 saw "the Gladiator" at his best as he crushed International Master Enrico Sevillano (2547) in an exciting game.(See Game 0095)  In the final round, our hero, battered, bruised and exhausted from his previous encounters could no longer thrust his sword and fell honorably to National Master Larry Tapper (2321). Still, a fantastic result against a very strong field of players.  Also, in the Top Section, Justin Daniel scored 2.5-2.5.  In the Under 2000 Section, Michael Curcuru was 2nd-4th with 4.5-.5 while Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway finished in the money with 3.5-1.5 posting wins over J. Fred Wilson, Patrick McCartney and Tim Bond. Patrick McCartney scored 3-2 while Don "Sky" Hofer posted an equal score.  Andras Bader went 2-3 and "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger  went .5-3.5. In the Under 1600 Section, Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell scored 3-2 while Spencer Singleton, Terry Brown, Nick Bambara and Brandon Brown went 2-3. "Amazing" Al Ashamalla slipped a bit with 1-4.  In the Under 1200 Section, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup scored 3.5-1.5. In the SpeedChess Tournament, Brandon Brown tied for 1st in the Under 1600 with 5-5. A more detailed narrative of this event may be viewed on our CCC Message Board.
