Chumachenko, Mabe Share Top Honors
at 1st Annual Carolinas Challenge; South
Carolina Wins Title!
Ft. Mill, SC 11-12-06: An extremely
disappointing turnout of only 42 of the most
talented chessplayers from North and South Carolina stepped
into the ring this
past weekend
at the beautiful Plaza Hotel at Carowinds in order to claim bragging
rights and take home the Carolinas
Challenge Cup! Amazingly,

different players were cash prize winners!  In
the Top Section, FM Andrey "the Giant" Chumachenko (2470) of Charlotte survived a extraordinary
final round game versus FM Ron Simpson
(2292) of Raleigh (See
Game 0577) to tie for =1st-2nd Place with Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2130) of Charlotte who had
been granted a final round 1/2 point Bye. Each scored 4-1 and took
home $225.
Chumachenko won the
Trophy on tiebreaks. (All other winners are listed below). After the
smoke cleared and the final calculations were done, (hanging chads
not withstanding!?) South Carolina
edged out North Carolina by 1.5 points!
Very  special thanks to Assistant Tournament Director David Causey
of Charleston who not only solved many never before seen pairing
problems, but also endured the unfriendly comments and complaints of
one bombastic malcontent who made no friends at this event. Otherwise,
the hotel rate was great, the playing hall was superb, the restaurant
was excellent and a good time was had by all! {I am extremely
disappinted with the overall turnout and lack of support from my own
club members. The event was advertised on websites and via E-mail, in
Chess Life and at least 500 flyers were mailed out to players from both
states. According to Georgia based Organizer Thad Rogers, "the numbers
have been way down over the past 2 years for all of my tournaments..."
Nevertheless, this organizer lost $900. Thanks to all who participated.
I had hoped that this event would start an annual tradition. I'm not so
sure now. Congratulations to Team SC! LF} Ps. Because of my poor
vision, I inadvertantly handed out two $50 dollar bills for $20's, and
would the person who stole the Class "C" trophy please return it?

McCartney Promoted to Chief TD for
CCC!
Charlotte, NC 11-26-06: Effective
immediately, and until further notice, LTD Patrick
McCartney will take over as chief Tournament Director for the Charlotte Chess Club.
This includes the Bertucci's
events as well as the Wednesday
evening round at Wendys.
Fuerstman will continue as chief organizer and Assistant TD by greeting
and
registering new members, collecting entry fees, occasionally
competing and editing the website.

record low turnout of only 14
pre- Thanksgiving revellers journied to this
turkey farm more  commonly
known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's LXXXII. In the Top Section,
the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, 2005 CCC Player of the Year NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton's (2287) second requested on
his behalf, and
was granted a 1/2 point Bye. Keeping pace was NM Leland "Ennui" Fuerstman (2016) who Drew a lively
encounter with Laura "Karate
Kid" Lee (1831) (See Game 0576)
each with 1.5-.5.
In addition, Expert Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (2016)
eviscerated Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1930) while Gary "NightCrawler" Newsom (1952) clobbered Michael "Bolton"
Kliber (1900). In the "B" Section,
12 year old phenom Samuel
"Xman" Xin (1754) outplayed
Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1694) and Marnzell
"Pat" Hand (1600) went "all
in" on Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1636) to share the lead
with 1
point.
In the Lower Section, Cesar "Read me my rights" Miranda (1309) took down (newlywed
to Patrick McCartney) Amanda McCartney (1068) to lead with 2-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Winfred "Guns" Gatlin. All
results may be observed on the current "Crosstable".

Paradis Takes Clear 1st
in Bertucci's XVI
Charlotte NC 11-18-06: A grand total of 8 wildcat chessplayers
from 2
states including 2 Russian
immigrants refused to honor the "Boycott" and converged upon Bertucci's
Italian Restaurant in order to
participate in Bertucci's XVI. In the Top Section,
15 year old phenom Thomas
"Dolby" Paradis (1910) of
Charlotte dispatched of Slava Fedko (1239) in Rd:1, Drew with Expert Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (2016) in Rd:2 and outplayed Gary
"NightCrawler" Newsom (1952) in the final round to score 2.5-.5 and
take home $80.
Equal 2nd-4th were McCartney, Newsom and Tracy Callis (1893) from Virginia
each with 2-1
winning $13.33.
