NEWS & VIEWS 10-14-04
Mabe Leads Top; Callahan "B"; Katz, Grechka "C";
Birsan, Xin, McLaughlin Lower Section of Wendy's LX
Charlotte,
NC 10-13-04: A respectable turnout
of 32 of the Metrolina area's most avid competitors,
and at least one interested spectator, gathered at this factory of chess
champions more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate
in Rd:2 of Wendy's LX. In
the Top Section, Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(2110) converted a Queen vs. Rook & Knight ending against NM Leland
"Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2047) to lead with 2-0.
Meanwhile, playing the defense in incredible time trouble, the CCC's new
#1 player, SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (2526) became involved
in a most extraordinary position with Expert Todd "ChessNinja" Trower
(2051) whereby
with a full board of pieces, the Black King somehow ended up on the "g2"
square! the game resulting in Draw. Meanwhile, the CCC's #2 player,
current N.C. Invitational Champion, Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2263) yielded a rare half point to Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2024),
after losing a whole Rook, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker
(1862) launched a vicious counter attack against Patrick "Flanker" McCartney
(1933) winning in the time scramble and Bobby "Duck" Waddell
(1763)
stole Superman's cape from Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836). In the
"B" Section,
Chris
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (1687) made his day against Jesse "James"
Eddleman (1645) to lead with 2-0. Also,
"Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1677) welcomed Laura Lee (1704) back
to CCC competition while
Ankit
"Butch"
Jivan
(1675) split the point with Viktor "the Mad Russian"
Ozherelyev
(1659). In the "C" Section,
Marty "Fritz"
Katz (1521)
debunked Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1565), Jonathan "Henry" Hudson
(1438) outdrew Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1475) and John "the Mad Siberian"
Grechka
(1462) upstaged "Dr." Phil Whittington (1365) to each lead with 1.5-.5.
In addition, Kevin Huang (1541) made peace with Spencer "Jazzman"
Singleton
(1571). In the Lower Section, Ilgin "the Mad Turk"
Birsan
(1197) converted against Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1145), Duncan "Doughnuts"
McLaughlin
(972) beat Joey "the Bull" Bullis (970) and
Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin
(1243) bested Joe Shirlen (1019) to each lead with
2-0.
Other Lower
Section winners were: Richard Towell.

Rangarajan, Tapia Share Top Honors in Green Market
Championship *Quick Rated
Charlotte,
NC 9-11-04: A cadre of 16
elite members of the CCC Honor Guard first
paused for a moment of silence to remember our fellow Americans who lost
their lives in the Twin Towers exactly 3 years ago, and then participated
in the Green Market Championship. This one section
open-air event, sponsored by Crown Communications,
coincided with the Saturday Green Market with it's
fresh vegetables, fruits, coffee, handy crafts, jewelry, etc. All players
enjoyed "free" coffee, bottled water, fresh baked muffins and giant
cookies from Reid's Fine Foods!
Save for a lively discussion with management about the DOGS in the playing
area?!? (a City Ordinance prohibits animals from civic gatherings)this
was a most enjoyable tournament for all. Sharing
Top
Honors
with 3-0 were SM Karthik
"Rajah"
Rangarajan
(Unr)
who registered wins over "Dr." Phil Whittington (1470), Walter "Mitty"
Overman (1473) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1858) and NM Daniel
"Johnny"
Tapia
(1753) who defeated Joshua "Moo" Mu (1340), the good Reverend Bernard "King"
Baker (1666) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2078). Each pocketed
$75.

capture clear 1st Place with 3-0
and take home $100.
