"C"; Nichols Lower Section of Wendy's LIX
Charlotte,
NC 9-29-04: A reasonably strong turnout of
35
for
the final round
(the
CCC is alive and well!), and
a grand total of 49 of the most gifted
and talented chessplayers from as far away as India, traveled to
this guild for future masters more commonly known as Wendy's in order to
participate in Wendy's LIX.
In the Top Section, the CCC's new #1 player, SM Karthik
"Rajah" Rangarajan (2526) dispatched of Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2031)
with alacrity to score 4.5-.5 and take
home the clear First Prize of $10,000!(See
Game 0431) Close behind was the CCC's #2 player,
current N.C. Invitiational Champion NM
Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2255)
who neutralized Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2110) and scored 4-1(See
Game 0430). In addition, after exchanging a Bishop
for 2 pawns, Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (1933) induced a blunder from NM Leland "El-Moron"
Fuerstman (2047) while the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker
(1853) resorted to kryptonite against Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836).
In the "B" Section, the CCC sanctioned a special remote game
played miles away from the site between Bobby "Duck" Waddell (1789) and
clear 1st Place winner Jesse "James" Eddleman (1645)
who scored 4-1 and won "Free
Entry" into the next Smokehouse. Meanwhile, Chris "Dirty
Harry" Callahan (1687) made his day against Ken "the Terrible" Ivens
(1661), "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1677) expatriated Viktor "the
Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1650) and the good Dr. Gerard "the Butcher"
Sztyber
(1769)
performed a precise surgical procedure on returnee to CCC competition Michael
"the Savage" Savage (1790). (Welcome back, Michael) In the
"C"
Section, Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1469) outdrew Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506) to share
=1st-2ndPlace
with "Dr." Phil Whittington (1365) who polished off Dave "Ameen"
Eadie (1540) each with 4.5-.5 winning
1/2 "Free Entry" into the next Smokehouse.
In addition, Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1438) schooled John
"the Mad Siberian" Grechka (1462) and in the "Battle of the Trumpet Players"
Lee
"R&Bman" Richardson (1269) upset Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton
(1571). In
the Lower Section, in spite of the fact that he was defeated
by Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1197), Ervon "Wooden"
Nichols
(1148) took clear 1st Place with 4-1
and "Free Entry" into the next Smokehouse.
Other Lower Section winners were: F. Dean Betts, Joe

Rangarajan, Tapia Share Top Honors in Green Market
Championship *Quick Rated
Charlotte,
NC 9-11-04: A cadre of 16
elite members of the CCC Honor Guard first
paused for a moment of silence to remember our fellow Americans who lost
their lives in the Twin Towers exactly 3 years ago, and then participated
in the Green Market Championship. This one section
open-air event, sponsored by Crown Communications,
coincided with the Saturday Green Market with it's
fresh vegetables, fruits, coffee, handy crafts, jewelry, etc. All players
enjoyed "free" coffee, bottled water, fresh baked muffins and giant
cookies from Reid's Fine Foods!
Save for a lively discussion with management about the DOGS in the playing
area?!? (a City Ordinance prohibits animals from civic gatherings)this
was a most enjoyable tournament for all. Sharing
Top
Honors
with 3-0 were SM Karthik
"Rajah"
Rangarajan
(Unr)
who registered wins over "Dr." Phil Whittington (1470), Walter "Mitty"
Overman (1473) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1858) and NM Daniel
"Johnny"
Tapia
(1753) who defeated Joshua "Moo" Mu (1340), the good Reverend Bernard "King"
Baker (1666) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2078). Each pocketed
$75.
