"Dog" Attacks "Outlaw," Maintains Lead in Top; Gordon Middle; 3, Lower Section of Wendy's XXX
Charlotte, NC 11-28-01: Thirty-eight of the Charlotte area's most creative thinkers abandoned their less important responsibilities and instead participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXX. In the Top Section, handling the defense, 2001 NC High School Champion, 17 year old phenom, Expert (and soon to be Master)Justin "Dog" Daniel (2185) ran roughshod over NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2095) to lead the tournament with 3.5-.5. Close on his heels with 3-1 is NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) who administered just enough kryptonite to mild mannered reporter Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1780). In addition, with the Black pieces, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2230) squeezed out a minor piece  ending versus Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1886). In the Cruiserweight Division, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1457) split the point with Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1789). In the Middle Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1625) drew with Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar (1472) keeping him 1/2 point ahead of the field. Also, in the Middle Section, newcomer David "Shaquille" O'Neill (1604) bested Carl "Codes" McKern (1501), finally on his forth try Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1458) defeated Michael "Y" Shoup (1470), Adam "EsqJr" Clontz (1407) outlasted Brandon "Starr" Brown (1491), Michael "Son-of-Al" Lipkin (1615) teed off on Paul "Big Bertha" Calloway (1663) and Euphemia "Screamer" Mu (1502) outplayed Curt "World B" Frueh (Unr). In the Lower Section leading with 3 points, Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1298) halted the winning streak of Joe Shirlen (1138) while Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1286) beat Copeland Blackwell (986). Other Lower Section winners were: Gaurav Gupte, Nick "BamBam" Bambara, Richard "Smith &" Wesson, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Louie Goodson and 8 year old Robert Broadbent who defeated 78 year old Elbert C. Blackwell. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." And, while you're at it, visit the "new" CCC Message Board www.charlottechess.com/wwwboard and speak to us!!
