NEWS &VIEWS 12-19-02
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Mouzon Takes Early Lead in
Top; F. Mu, Callahan Middle; Ashamalla Lower Section of Wendy's XLI
Charlotte,
NC 12-18-02: Thirty-four chessplayers from
hither and yon dressed as Santa Claus arrived by sleigh and raindeerto
this festive tabernacle of competitors more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's XLI. In the
Top
Section, NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2-0)
(2194) received
an early Christmas gift from NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (1-1)
(2064) {who attempted to gobble down too much holiday candy with ...17
gf??, then things really got ugly?!} to lead with 2-0.
Meanwhile, the CCC's #1 active player, NC State Champion
NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (1.5-.5)
(2257) used
Patrick "Flanker" McCartney's (.5-1.5)
(1982) position as a pinãta! Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(1.5-.5)
(1887) blasted one over the head of Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (.5-1.5)
(1739) (See Game 0280)
and CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom Expert Daniel "Johnny"
Tapia
(1-0)
(2114) (who just tied for =1st-2nd Place at
the National Grade Championships in Atlanta last weekend!)
used just enough kryptonite to defeat Clarke "Kent" Brosi (0-2)
(1853). In the Cruiserweight Division, Deneil "Sean"
Brazell
(1-1)
(1759)
beat down Michael "the Lip" Lipkin (0-1)
(1673). In the Middle Section, Frank "Moo" Mu(2-0)
(1675) obviously used some kind of government agent voodoo on Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas (1-1) (1614) and Chris
"Dirty
Harry" Callahan (2-0)
(1452) deported Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1-1)
(1602) to each lead with 2-0. In addition,
Mark
"Chessman" Johnson (1.5-.5)
(1471) earned a hard fought half point versus Jonathan Munnell (1.5-.5)
(1453), the good Reverend Bernard "JoeDon" Baker (1-1)
(1567)
blew the fuses of Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg
(0-2)
(1571), Michael "twist &" Shoup (1-1)
played taps for Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (0-1)
(1429), "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1-1)
(1616) eclipsed Brandon "Starr" Brown (.5-1.5)
(1479) and Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1-0)
(1602) defeated Joshua "Moo" Mu (1-1)
(1217). In the Lower Section, CCC Player Representative
Alphonse
"the Fonz" Ashamalla (2-0)
(1371)
upstaged Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (0-1)
(1352) to lead with 2-0. Other Lower
Section
winners were: Winfred "Guns" Gatlin, Ankit "Butch"
Jivan
and Duncan "Chester" McLaughlin. All results may be viewed
in the "Current Crosstable." Visit

Jurjevic, Mabe Share Top
Honors; Eberhardinger Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIV
Charlotte,
NC 12-21-02: A rather moderate
turnout of 18 indefatigable
chessplayers participated
in Smokehouse XXXIV. In the Top Section, which was
noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated
that the fear of losing was the reason), NM
Joseph
Jurjevic (2154) shared the point with Kenneth J. Baxter (1900) in Rd:1
before logging in victories versus Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1746) and Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2114) while Chris
"the Babe" Mabe (1886) drew Expert Tapia (2114) in Rd:1 then
defeated Robert C. Moore (1700) and Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) to share
=1st-2nd
with a score of 2.5-.5
and take home $75.
The Lower Section was dominated by "Iron"
Mike Eberhardinger (1600) who reeled off wins versus James
MacDougall (1696), Mark "Chessman" Johnson (1486) and the good Reverend
Bernard "JoeDon" Baker (1575) to score a perfect 3-0
and take home $80.
Honorable mention goes to Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) who
upset NM Fuerstman (2064) and Expert Keith Eubanks (1997) in Rds: 1
&
