CCC NEWS &VIEWS 11-14-02
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Lane, Tapia Lead Top; Sztyber, Johnson Middle; Hashemloo Lower Section of Wendy's XL
Charlotte, NC  11-13-02:  A rather healthy turnout of 36 of the most rabid chess players from the Metrolina area removed themselves from their cathode tubes and participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's XL. In the Top Section, NM John "Night Train" Lane (2073) steamed past Patrick "Flunker" McCartney (1987) while Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2114) perpetrated a mild upset versus NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2192) to each lead with 2.5-.5. In addition, (yet another classical example of making chicken salad out of chicken s--t) as NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2062) locked the phone booth on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853). (See Game 0271)In the Cruiserweight Division, Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1759) split the point with Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1782). In the Middle Section, the operation was a success, but the patient has expired, as Dr. Gerard "Kevorkian" Sztyber (1702) removed and sold the vital organs of Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1709) while Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1486) short circuited Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1553) to each lead with 3-0. Meanwhile, Frank "Moo" Mu (1741) shared the point with Danesh Dadgar (1602), Robert "See" Moore (1700) wore a bullet proof vest against Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1410), Brandon "Starr" Brown (1504) beat Tony Hicks (Unr) and  Michael "Y" Shoup (1451) Drew with Robert "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1452) as did Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1602) versus Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1718). In the Lower Section, Hassan Hashemloo (1280) bested Mike Richards (1285) to lead with 3-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Kevin Blackwell and Kevin Huang. What, Me Worry?! Tapia Perfect in Top; Baker Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXII
Charlotte, NC 10-19-02: A rather light turnout of 18 die-hard chessplayers who did not compete in the S.C. Championship nor Raleigh participated in Wendy's XXXII. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason) CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom Expert Daniel "Alfred E. Neuman" Tapia (2109) dispatched of Scott Baldwin (1832) in Rd:1, Chris Mabe (1886) in Rd:2 and finally NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) to score 3-0 and win $100. Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were Fuerstman(See Game 0267), Patrick McCartney, Chris Mabe and Deneil Brazell each winning $12.50. The Lower Section was dominated by the good Reverend Bernard Baker (1609) who defeated Duncan McLaughlin, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton and Hassan Hashemloo to score 3-0 and pocket $80. Equal 2nd-4th were Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton, Hassan Hashemloo and Jonathan Munnell each with 2-1 winning $13.
