CCC NEWS & VIEWS 4-7-05

Newton Leads Top; A. Wheeless "B"; Nichols "C"; Nobody Lower Section of  Wendy's LXV
Charlotte, NC 4-6-05: A reasonably strong turnout of 30 of the greater Charlotte area's most creative calculators clocked in to this factory where chess champions are assembled more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's LXV. In the Top Section, the winningest player in CCC history, CCC's #3 player, 2004 N.C. Invitational Champion, pride of Crouse, N.C. NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2295) was put to task by 16 year old phenom  Matthew "the Bean" Green (1903) but, as usual, prevailed in the end to lead with 2-0. Meanwhile, Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1912) seems to be making a habit of clobbering NM Leland "El-Guappo" Fuerstman (2034) and Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800) finally slowed down "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1757) who lately, has been en fuego! In the "B" Section, Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1617) snapped an early pawn and ultimately prevailed upsetting the CCC's most improved player, 2004 "D" Player of the Year Marty "Fritz" Katz (1709!) to lead with 2-0. In addition, Dave "Richman" Richards (1661) went bare knuckles on Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1710), Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1594) beat down Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1646) and Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1702) split the point with "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700). In the "C" Section, when he ain't blasting a riff on his trumpet, he's checkmating somebody...this guy is moving up quickly, people; Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1473) who scored 5-0 in the last Wendy's tournament, has launched a successful campaign in the "C" Section with his second win in as many weeks, this time over Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) to lead with 2-0. Meanwhile, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1538) refused to lose against Team Wheeless for the second week in a row with a hard fought win over Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1475), Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1496) tamed Tony "the Tiger" Hicks (1333), Octavius "0-0" Obey (1518) bested Michael Baker (1078) and just in the nick of time Donald "Trump" Hofer (1602) split the point with Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1511). In the Lower Section, where no player has  more than a 50% score, wins were submitted by Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Joe Shirlen and Reid Ward. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable E-mail me at lelandfue@yahoo.com to add your name to the "List of Players" who intend to participate in Billy's III on April 16. Oblitas Takes Top Honors; Eberhardinger Middle; Singleton, McAdams Lower Section of Billy's II
Charlotte NC 3-19-05:
A rather strong turnout of 28 of the Metrolina area's most courageous competitors converged upon Billy's Restaurant in order compete in Billy's II.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the friendly and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably priced cuisine and modern sports bar design of the recently renovated facility. (Playing in a completely silent, upstairs private room seems to be a welcome change, as well). In the Top Section taking clear 1st Place, the CCC's new #1 player, International Master Carlomagno Oblitas (2493), originally from Peru and now a resident of Charlotte, in Rd:1 sacrificed 2 pawns in a book line "c3" Sicilian and then proceeded to pick NM Leland "El-guappo" Fuerstman's (2034) position apart like a crab. In Rd:2 playing the defense, the good IM sent Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2102) packing and in the final round he disposed of Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1941) to score 3-0 and pocket $100. Kudos to McCartney who in rounds 1 & 2 had upset SC icon NM Klaus Pohl (2200) (See Game 0464) and NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2197) respectively! Equal 2nd-4th were Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1941), NM Klaus Pohl (2200) and Matthew "Hoekstra" Green (1895) each with 2-1 winning $17. In the Middle Section, "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1706) scored a perfect 3-0 to take clear 1st Place and win $100. Equal 2nd-5th were Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1667), Don "Trump" Hofer (1585), Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1627) and Josh "the Law" Lawson (1563) each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd Place was shared by Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1499) and Jeff McAdams (1537) each with 2.5-.5 winning $60. To observe all results see (Crosstable). See you at Billy's III, April 16
