NC 5-11-05: A solid turnout of 34 of the Metrolina
area's most creative cognoscentes converged upon this mental
battlefield where egos are adjusted more commonly known as
Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2
of Wendy's LXVI. In
the Top Section, the
CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2295) AKA
"the Gladiator" survived a wild
Blumenfeld Counter Gambit with 1:12 left on his
clock thusly demonstrating
to NM Leland El-Perro" Fuerstman (2034) why it is necessary to have Pawns in front of one's King! (See Game 0476)
Sharing the lead with 2-0 is the
CCC's #3 player, 3 time NC Scholastic
Champion, NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2201) who defended handily against Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(2152) (See Mabe-TAPIA) In addition, Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1997)
agonized through a long sermon by the good Reverend Bernard "King"
Baker (1881). In the "B" Section,
Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1699) upset Gary "Sandbagger"
Branton (1800) to share the lead
at 2-0
with Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1660) who
fired Donald "Trump" Hofer (1605). Meanwhile, "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) schooled Amelia
"Wheels" Wheeless (1617) and Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1679) beat down
Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1633). In the "C"
Section, David "Rocket"
Forehand (1541)
served an ace on Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1533) to lead with 2-0. In addition, Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1511)
played a series of high notes on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1496) Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1473) tamed Tony "the
Tiger" Hicks (1333) and Ilgin "the
Mad Turk" Birsan (1424) split
the point with Octavius "0-0" Obey (1526). In the Lower Section, Chris Kohlhepp (1249)
turned "states evidence" on Joey "the Bull" Bullis (1285) to lead with 2-0. Other Lower Seciton winners were: Duncan "Doughnuts" McLaughlin, Joe Shirlen, Jordan Ware, Robert Broadbent and Copeland Blackwell (See
Game 0478). All

Eubanks Takes Top;
Lawson, Eadie Middle; Thiede, Hicks Lower Section of
Billy's IV
Charlotte
NC 5-14-05: A stronger turnout of 28 of the Metrolina
area's most courageous competitors converged upon Billy's Restaurant
in order compete in Billy's IV. Every player to a man
thoroughly enjoyed the
friendly
and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably
priced cuisine and modern sports bar design of the recently renovated
facility. Playing
in a completely silent room seems to be a welcome change, as well. In
the Top Section, Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2049) from Columbia, SC
dispatched of Thomas "Dolby" Paradis (1840) in Rd:1, NM Leland "El-perro" Fuerstman
(2034) in Rd:2 and Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1710) in Rd:3 to take clear 1st Place with 3-0 and win $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1997) of Charlotte who
pocketed $50.
{Honorable mention to 15 year old Laura
Lee (1710) who upset Matthew Green (1912) and Thomas Paradis
(1840) in the first two rounds!} In the Middle Section, =1st-2nd were Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1633) of Charlotte and Josh "the
Law" Lawson (1688) of
Greensboro each with 2.5-.5
winning $75.
In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd was shared by Erik-Henning Thiede (1450) of
Mooresville and Tony "the
Tiger" Hicks (1333) of
Salisbury each with 2.5-.5
winning $60.
