CCC NEWS & VIEWS 5-12-05

Newton, Tapia Lead Top; Lee, Hudson "B"; Forehand "C"; Kohlhepp Lower Section of Wendy's LXVI
Charlotte, NC 5-11-05:  A solid turnout of 34 of the Metrolina area's most creative cognoscentes converged upon this mental battlefield where egos are adjusted more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's LXVI. In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2295) AKA "the Gladiator" survived a wild Blumenfeld Counter Gambit with 1:12 left on his clock thusly demonstrating to NM Leland El-Perro" Fuerstman (2034) why it is necessary to have Pawns in front of one's King! (See Game 0476) Sharing the lead with 2-0 is the CCC's #3 player, 3 time NC Scholastic Champion, NM Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2201) who defended handily against Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2152) (See  Mabe-TAPIA) In addition, Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1997) agonized through a long sermon by the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1881). In the "B" Section, Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1699) upset Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800) to share the lead at 2-0 with Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1660) who fired Donald "Trump" Hofer (1605). Meanwhile, "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) schooled Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1617) and Marty "Fritz" Katz (1679) beat down Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1633). In the "C" Section, David "Rocket" Forehand (1541) served an ace on Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1533) to lead with 2-0. In addition, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1511) played a series of high notes on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1496) Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1473) tamed Tony "the Tiger" Hicks (1333) and Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1424) split the point with Octavius "0-0" Obey (1526). Eubanks Takes Top; Lawson, Eadie Middle; Thiede, Hicks Lower Section of Billy's IV
Charlotte NC 5-14-05:
A stronger  turnout of 28 of the Metrolina area's most courageous competitors converged upon Billy's Restaurant in order compete in Billy's IV.
Every player to a man thoroughly enjoyed the friendly and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably priced cuisine and modern sports bar design of the recently renovated facility. Playing in a completely silent room seems to be a welcome change, as well. In the Top Section, Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2049) from Columbia, SC dispatched of Thomas "Dolby" Paradis (1840) in Rd:1, NM Leland "El-perro" Fuerstman (2034) in Rd:2 and Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1710) in Rd:3 to take clear 1st Place with 3-0 and win $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1997) of Charlotte who pocketed $50. {Honorable mention to 15 year old Laura Lee (1710) who upset Matthew Green (1912) and Thomas Paradis (1840) in the first two rounds!}  In the Middle Section, =1st-2nd were Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1633) of Charlotte and Josh "the Law" Lawson (1688) of Greensboro each with 2.5-.5 winning $75. In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd was shared by Erik-Henning Thiede (1450) of Mooresville and Tony "the Tiger" Hicks (1333) of Salisbury each with 2.5-.5 winning $60.
