NEWS & VIEWS 5-26-05Newton Leads Top, But 11 Game Winning Streak Snapped!; Lee "B"; Forehand "C"; Kohlhepp, Blackwell Lower Section of Wendy's LXVI Charlotte, NC 5-25-05: A slightly stronger turnout of 34 of the Metrolina area's most capable competitors journied to this factory where chess champions are assembled more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's LXVI.  In the Top Section, the
CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2295) AKA
"the Gladiator" watched his incredible 11 game winning streak,
spanning 3 tournaments, come to
an end after he yielded a Draw to Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2137) but still leads with 3.5-.5. (Mabe just returned from the Millennium
Chess Festival where he scored 6-3 and
brought home $150,000).
Meanwhile, Expert Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer (2048) survived
a wild and crazy melee versus Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1997) (See Game 0480)
and NC
Chess Hall of Famer NM Leland
"El-Perro" Fuerstman (2034)
tried everything imaginable but was unable to convert against a wily
good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1873). In the "B" Section,
Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1745) hung tough against
seasoned veteran "Sponge" Bob Moore
(1700) but still leads with 3.5-.5. In
addition, Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1787) exited a phone booth
with a big "S" on his chest and
administered "truth and justice, the American way" against Gary
"Sandbagger" Branton (1800), Jonathan
"Henry" Hudson (1660)
outlasted Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1617), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1638) made peace with Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1531) and Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1683) yielded a Draw to Donald "Trump" Hofer (1605). In the "C" Section,  newcomer
David "Rocket" Forehand
(1541) executed a tactical
trick upon Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1473) to lead with 3.5-.5. In
addition, Champion Homeschoolers
Coach Keith "Sherlock" Holmes (1438) solved the case
against Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1445), Octavius
"0-0" Obey (1526) notched the
win against Hassan "HH" Hashemloo (1182), Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1496) welcomed new member Dave Peter
(Unr) and Ilgin
"the Mad Turk" Birsan (1424)
registered a Draw against Colette
"Wheels" Wheeless (1536). In
the Lower Section, Copeland "Copie" Blackwell (1135) and Chris Kohlhepp
(1249) share the lead with 2.5-1.5.
Other Lower Section winners were: Michael Baker, Joe Shirlen and Corey Frazier. All

| Eubanks Takes Top;
Lawson, Eadie Middle; Thiede, Hicks Lower Section of
Billy's IV Charlotte NC 5-14-05: A stronger turnout of 28 of the Metrolina area's most courageous competitors converged upon Billy's Restaurant in order compete in Billy's IV.  Every player to a man
thoroughly enjoyed the
friendly
and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably
priced cuisine and modern sports bar design of the recently renovated
facility. Playing
in a completely silent room seems to be a welcome change, as well. In
the Top Section, Expert Keith "Chuckie" Eubanks (2049) from Columbia, SC
dispatched of Thomas "Dolby" Paradis (1840) in Rd:1, NM Leland "El-perro" Fuerstman
(2034) in Rd:2 and  Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1710) in Rd:3 to take clear 1st Place with 3-0 and win $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1997) of Charlotte who
pocketed $50.
{Honorable mention to 15 year old Laura
Lee (1710) who upset Matthew Green (1912) and Thomas Paradis
(1840) in the first two rounds!} In the Middle Section, =1st-2nd were Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1633) of Charlotte  and Josh "the
Law" Lawson (1688) of
Greensboro each with 2.5-.5
winning $75.
In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd was shared by Erik-Henning Thiede (1450) of
Mooresville and Tony "the
Tiger" Hicks (1333) of
Salisbury each with 2.5-.5
winning $60.
