CCC
NEWS & VIEWS 7-28-05
Rangarajan Leads Top; Katz, Hudson "B"; Ozherelyev, Holmes,
Gatlin "C"; Fan Lower
Section of Wendy's LXVIII
Charlotte, NC 7-27-05:
A strong turnout of 40 of the Metrolina
area's most creative chess astronauts braved this remarkable heat wave
and congregated at our alternative NASA launching pad more
commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd: 3 of Wendy's LXVIII. Dude,
I kid you not, it was 119
degrees this afternoon on my deck! In the Top Section,
the CCC's #1 player and North Carolina's
offically highest rated player SM Karthik
"Rajah" Rangarajan (2468) met
stiff resistance in the form of the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2299) AKA "the Gladiator."
Newton had swapped his Queen
for a bunch of pieces and the initiative but with both players in
severe time trouble, Rangarajan
prevailed to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, Expert Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer (2048) clobbered
Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1911), Expert Chris
"the Babe" Mabe (2176) welcomed
back the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1859), Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1800) got a submission hold on
Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800), Expert Michael "See You Are; See You are
You" Curcuru (2105) barely
survived a Rook vs Rook & 2 pawns ending versus Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1997) and
NM Leland "Perro Grande" Fuerstman (2003) survived the exact
same ending against Gary "the
Nuisance" Newsom (1987) each
Drawing. In the "B" Section, Marty "Fritz" Katz (1734) played like 'Fritz'
against Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1747) and Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1610)
drowned in the Jonathan "Henry"
Hudson (1678) river each with 2-0.
Meanwhile, "Look, up in sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman"
disguised as mild mannered Clarke
"Kent" Brosi (1781) who fought
for truth and justice the American way versus Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless
(1640), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1621) upset Joshua "Moo" Mu
(1677) and "Sponge" Bob Moore
(1700) made peace with Jon
"the Mad Siberian" Grechka
(1605). In the "C" Section, Keith "Sherlock" Holmes (1420) jammed the barrells
of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1458) and Viktor
"the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev
(1526) caused Donald "Trump" Hofer (1627) to spill his "Herbalife"
cocktail each leading with 2-1. In
addition, Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587) rolled over Wilfred
Drath (1516). In the Lower Section, Jim "Today, I definitely needed a" Fan (1397) split the point with Chang "Moon" Sun (1380) to lead with 2.5-.5. Other
Lower Section winners were: Hassan "HH" Hashemloo, Dyrus "What is it good for" Wuor, Chris Kohlhepp, Robby Broadbent and Sarah Yaghoubi. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable E-mail

Curcuru, Fuerstman Share
Top Honors; Abdelkefi, McAdams, Singleton, Wheeless
=1st-4th in Lower Section of Bertucci's I
Charlotte NC 7-16-05: A grand total of 23 chessplayers from hither and
yon travelled to the Queen City in order to participate in Bertucci's I. (Believe
it or not, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant
is actually better than Billy's! The simi-private
playing area was spacious and well lighted, the traditional Italian
cuisine was delicious, reasonably priced and far more than I could eat,
and the servers and management made us feel very welcome.) In the Top Section,
returning to CCC
competition, with 3 seconds left, Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are
You" Curcuru (2114)
miraculously survived a Rd:1
debacle Drawing 10 year old phenom Joshua
"Moo" Mu
(1677) before defeating Dan "Ski" Andrzejewski (1760) in Rd:2 and Expert Chris "the Babe"
Mabe (2176) in Rd:3 to score 2.5-.5 and
share =1st-2nd Place with NM Leland "Perro-Grande" Fuerstman (2003) who dispatched of
Tom Hales (1646) in Rd:1,
yielded a Draw to Randy
"Wheels" Wheeless (1707) in Rd:2 and defeated Joshua
"Moo" Mu (1677) in Rd:3 each
winning $80. In the Lower
Section, =1st-4th were Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1560), Jeff "Chief" McAdams (1520), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1477) and Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587) each
scoring 2.5-.5
and winning $40.
