Wendy's LIX Begins; Tapia Draws Rangarajan! - Free Food Again Next Week !!
Charlotte, NC 9-1-04:  A healthy turnout of 28 of the Charlotte area's most gifted and talented converged upon this famous think-tank of chessplayers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's LIX. In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, current NC Invitational Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2264) was taken to task by the good Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1746) but prevailed in the end to lead with 1-0. Sharing that lead are Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2104) who outplayed the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1820), Todd "ChessNinja" Trower (2036) who clobbered Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1900) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) who squeezed out a probably drawn Bishop vs. Knight ending against Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836). Meanwhile, the CCC's new #1 player, defending Wendy's Champion FM Karthik Ranjarajan (2586p) snagged a pawn from challenger Master Elect Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2246) but with less than 1 minute remaining on each clock agreed that the position was Drawn (See Game 0422).In the "B" Section leading with 1-0, Bobby "Duck" Waddell (1763) did a duck walk on Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1665), Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1540) begged for a Draw just before his victory over Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1614) and the battle between Walter "Mitty" Overman (1661) and Jesse "James" Eddleman (1645) ended peacefully. In the "C" Section leading with 1-0, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506) blasted through the ouija board of Kert "Oracle" Edward (1552), "Dr" Phil Whittington (1427) schooled Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birson (1141)  Marty "Fritz" Katz (1469) muted the trumpet of Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1561) and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1505) drew with Jonathan "Hornet" Hudson (1460). In the Lower Section, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols and Don "Scott" Norwood lead with 1-0. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable." Next Smokehouse Saturday, September 18.
