CCC
NEWS & VIEWS 8-12-04
Rangarajan Leads Top; Huang "B"; Gatlin, Eadie
"C"; G. Song Lower Section of Wendy's LVIII
Charlotte,
NC 8-11-04: A rather light turnout of 24, including
this interested spectator, (a few of our best players are competing in
the U.S. Open!, the others are simply scared!) abandoned
their cathode tubes and participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's LVIII.
In the Top Section, the imminent showdown between the CCC's
#2 player, 2004 N.C. State Invitational Champion, the pride of Crouse,
N.C. NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2264) and new CCC #1 player,
FIDE Master Karthik Rangarajan (2306),
now with 2.5-.5, resulted in an extremely
hard fought Draw! (View Rangarajan's Games: (Rd:1)(Rd:2)
(Rd:3). Meanwhile, NM Leland "Grandpa"
Fuerstman (2000) snagged a normally questionable pawn and then
proceeded to slaughter Todd "Chessninja" Trower (2036) (See
Game 0411) while Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer (1992) hung tough against the good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1820). In addition, a rusty Jamie McGavran (1926) was upset
by "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1666). In the "B" Section,
despite the fact that he was defeated by Ankit "Butch" Jivan
(1665),
Kevin
"Spacey" Huang (1645) still leads with
1.5-1.5.
In the "C" Section, despite the fact the he lost to Kert
"Oracle" Edward (1552),
Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506)
still maintains a share of the lead at 1.5-1.5
with Dave "Ameen"
Eadie (1545) who handled Spencer "Jazzman'
Singleton (1545) (See Game 0412).
In addition,
Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1505) did a drumroll on
Marty "Fritz" Katz (1468) who missed the winning move in time trouble!?
In the Lower
Section,
9 year old Greg Song (966) won the exchange and finally the game
versus 9 year old Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1076) to remain as the only 3-0
in the tournament. Other Lower Section winners were: Ervon "Wooden"
Nichols
and F. Dean Betts. All results may be observed on the "Current
Crosstable." Next Smokehouse Saturday,
