Merchant Fends Off Outlaw - Shares Lead; "Flash" Gordon Seeks $500 Bonus in Lower Section of Wendy's XXI
Charlotte, NC - 1-10-01: Twenty-eight participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXI.  In the Top Section, the encounter between leaders NM Garik "Outlaw" Wells (2087) and Jon "the Merchant" Pietras (1809) ended in a Draw giving each a score of 3-1. (Though he is the lowest rated player in the Top Section, Pietras has played his 7th consecutive game without a loss!) Also, in the Top Section, NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2202) overcame an extremely cramped position versus NM Leland Fuerstman (2026) after mutual time trouble induced the latter player to unnecessarily sacrifice a piece. (See Game 0159)  Meanwhile, with the Black pieces, David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1882) initiated newcomer Keith Whitaker (1850) while Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1929) split the point with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1597) stopped Paul Lucas (1600), Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1664) exacted revenge for last week's loss upon Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1481) and Rajeev Rao (1541A) handled D. Paul Jenkins (1523).  In the Lower Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1328) remains the lone CCC player with a perfect score. Few chessplayers anywhere can claim that they have played a single game of chess for $500!(Good luck, "Flash").  Other Lower Section winners were: Joe Shirlen, Randy Hunter, Frank Johnson, Eric Melton, Brandon Brown & Frank Mu. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Newton Perfect in Smokehouse X; Morse Captures Lower Section
Charlotte, NC - 12-16-00: A total of 16 weekend warriors forwent shopping for Christmas/ Chanukah/Kwanza/Ramadan gifts and instead participated in Smokehouse X.  In the Top Section, taking home $100, NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2199) more closly represented "Scrooge" as he spoiled the Christmas Eves of  D. Paul Jenkins (1582), "Iron" Mike" Eberhardinger (1658) and CCC Favorite Son "Elect" Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1571). Clear Second Place winning $50 was Patrick McCartney (1923) with 2.5-.5. An amazing anomaly occurred when 14 year old Daniel "Johnny" Tapia claimed his first "Master scalp" after he upset 53 year old NM Leland Fuerstman (2027) in Rd:2.!?! (See Game 0156) The Lower Section was controlled by Rob Morse (1300) with 2.5-.5 winning $60. Second Place winning $30 was Frank Mu (900) with 2-1.  Fuerstman Directed.
