Flash:  Mad Cow Disease Ruled Out; Mysterious Chess Virus Likely Culprit of Mutations
Charlotte, NC - 12-9-00: After a thorough investigation by the Atlanta Center for Disease Control, it can safely be stated that there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that food served at Wendy's was contaminated with the "Mad Cow Disease" virus. However, some members of the CCC have exhibited symptoms of a curious yet undetected malady which causes certain facial changes. Scientists speculate that this could be due to a rare condition referred to as "CFS" or "Chess Fatigue Syndrome." In order to observe these startling images Click Here.

Newton, Daniel, McCartney Share Top Honors; DeBell, Jenkins Capture Middle; Clontz Lower Section of Wendy's XX

Charlotte, NC - 12-13-00: A grand total of 50 of the Metrolina area's most confident competitors participated in Wendy's XX. This tournament featured a Bonus of $300 for a perfect 5-0 score. (According to our records, the last player to score 5-0 in a Wendy's tournament was NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells)  Unfortunately, no one was able to achieve that feat this time. Therefore, for our "final" tournament at Wendy's (they are razing the building in January?!) the CCC will pay a bonus of $500!! for a perfect score!

The Top Section of Wendy's XX ended in a three-way tie for First Place as tournament leader NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2199) was unable to attend allowing CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2106) who yielded a Draw to Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1897) to each equal the good master's 3 point total. Meanwhile, NM Leland Fuerstman's (2027) attempt to catch the leaders fell 1/2 point short after a late R&P endgame "blunder" against long time antagonist NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) whereby the latter player, a true gentleman, offered Draw. In the Cruiserweight Division, rising star Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1501) took it on the chin from Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1824).  In the Middle Section, leader Jerome "Bounceback" DeBell (1456) drew his final round versus Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1489) which allowed D. Paul Jenkins (1585) who upset Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1644) to tie for First Place with 4-1.  Also, in the Middle Section, Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1664) outmaneuvered "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1658) while Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1611) drew with Paul Lucas (1600).  In the Lower Section, Adam "Esq Jr" Clontz (1177) asserted his authority over the field with a final round win over Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1328) to score 4.5-.5. Second place with 3.5-1.5 was Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1274) who defeated Anthony Smith (1205).  Other Lower Section winners were:  Joe Shirlen, Ankit Jivan, Don Norwood, Eric Melton and Frank Mu. Final results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." All welcome new CCC members David Carol and Alan Crombie. See ya' at Smokehouse X this Saturday, December 16. LF

Newton Perfect in Smokehouse X; Morse Captures Lower Section
Charlotte, NC - 12-16-00: A total of 16 weekend warriors forwentshopping for Christmas/ Chanukah/Kwanza/Ramadan gifts and instead participated in Smokehouse X.  In the Top Section, taking home $100, NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2199) more closly represented "Scrooge" as he spoiled the Christmas Eves of  D. Paul Jenkins (1582), "Iron" Mike" Eberhardinger (1658) and CCC Favorite Son "Elect" Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1571). Clear Second Place winning $50 was Patrick McCartney (1923) with 2.5-.5. An amazing anomaly occurred when 14 year old Daniel "Johnny" Tapia claimed his first "Master scalp" after he upset 53 year old NM Leland Fuerstman (2027) in Rd:2.!?! (See Game 0156) The Lower Section was controlled by Rob Morse (1300) with 2.5-.5 winning $60. Second Place winning $30 was Frank Mu (900) with 2-1.  Fuerstman Directed.
