Pietras Takes Clear 1st Place in Top; Lucas Middle; Gordon Lower Section of Wendy's XXI - Gordon Probable Winner of $500 Bonus!!
Charlotte, NC - 1-17-01:A particularly large crowd of chess dilettantes and energumens (possibly as a result of the "great article" in Sunday's Mecklenburg Neighbor's Section about the Charlotte Chess Club) gathered at our sacred temple of thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to observe and participate in the ultimate round of Wendy's XXI. An incredible anomaly occurred as Jon "the Merchant" Pietras (1809) the lowest rated player in the Top Section, won his final round versus David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1882)  (See Game 0160) to take clear 1st Place with 4-1. Among "the Merchant's" last 8 undefeated tournament encounters he has defeated the CCC's highest rated player, NM Frankie Newton (2202) and Drawn NM Fuerstman (2026) and NM Wells (2087) twice! Meanwhile, Draws were turned in by NM Garik "Outlaw" Wells (2087) vs. Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1929) (See Game 0161)  and NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) vs. NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2026). In addition, upstart Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1597) holds an edge in his adjournment against NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2202).  In the Middle Section, PaulLucas' win over newcomer Jim Fisher (Unr) gave him a score of 3.5-1.5 and clear 1st Place. In addition, Mike Eberhardinger (1662) was stumped by D. Paul Jenkins (1523), Jerome DeBell (1436) upset Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1664) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1481) drew "CEO" Mike Isner (1429). In the Lower Section, the showdown between Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1328) and Frank Johnson (1350) became a see-saw battle from which the former player emerged a piece to the good. In this humble master's opinion, the adjourned position strongly favors "Flash" who will "probably" score 5-0 and collect a cash bonus of $500!! Other Lower Section winners were: Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Don Norwood, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Adam Clontz and Ankit Jivan. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." In all, a total of 51 different players participated in the tournament...indeed, the Charlotte Chess Club is alive and well! All welcome new members Jim Fisher, Robert Mitchel and Jeorg Talbert. See ya' Saturday at Smokehouse XI. LF
Newton and Fuerstman Share Top Honors; DeBell Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XI

Charlotte, NC - 1-20-01: Twenty-two real men disguised as chessplayers participated in Smokehouse XI. In the Top Section, NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2202) defeated Patrick"Flanker" McCartney (1929) in Rd:1 before being slowed by the "Dutch" Defense of NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2026).  A difficult Rd:3 victory over CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122) allowed Newton to tie for First Place with 2.5-.5. Fuerstman dispatched of Robert C. Moore (1750) in Rd:1 and Kenneth J. Baxter (1936) in Rd:3 (See Game 0162). Each won $75.  In the Lower Section, $100 cash was paid to Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1436) who performed a "hat trick" with wins over Steve Childress (1000), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1195) and "CEO" Mike Isner (1429). Tied for 2nd-4th with 2-1 were "CEO" Mike Isner, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky each winning $25. Fuerstman Directed.
