NEWS & VIEWS 1-8-04
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Lane Leads Top; Dadgar "B"; 50%ers "C" and Lower
Section of Wendy's LII
Charlotte,
NC 1-7-04: A rather healthy turnout of 38
of our most dedicated chessplayers braved the congested traffic and freezing
temperatures and arrived at this terminal
of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate
in Rd:2 of Wendy's LII. In the Top Section, NM
John
"Night Train" Lane (2069), now a full point ahead of the field with
2-0,
engineered a rather stubborn defense against S.C. Expert Keith "Chuck"
Eubanks (2070) who ultimately overstepped the time limit. Meanwhile, the
CCC's #1 player, NM
Frankie
"Blitzin" Newton (2246) was forced to yield yet another Draw for
the second time in as many weeks; this time to CCC Favorite Son and 2003
NC Scholastic Champion Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2159)
and NM Leland "El-be careful or your own student will kick your
ass" Fuerstman (2012) surrendered 1/2 point to Jim "Sticks"
Ulaky
(1607)!? In addition, Patrick
"Slammer" McCartney (1997) checkmated Expert Michael "See You Are;
See You Are You" Curcuru (2054) in a rather animated fashion (payback's
a bitch, ain't it?!) while Chris
"the Babe" Mabe (1963) rolled up and smoked Jon "Cigars" Pietras
(1802) and NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2040) split the point
with the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1851) (See
Game 0369). In the "B" Section,
Danesh
"DD" Dadgar (1712) manhandled Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1774) to
lead with 2-0.
In addition, "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1708) used his chain-saw
on Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1735), Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan
(1667) made his day against Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632)
and Michael "the Average" Savage (1640) made peace with newly
(unofficially)
crowned "B" Player Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1649)! In
the "C" Section, Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1592) clogged
the barrels of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1541), Brian "Tiger" Woods
(1550) teed off on Kert "the Other Side" Edward (1497),
Tom "the
Twin" Chen (1491) tamed Sean "the Villian" Villone (1312), Spencer
"Jazzman"
Singleton
(1501) splyt the poynt with Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1503)
and Algie "Crumpler"
Clyburn (1500) stalemated Tim
"the Twin" Chen (1591). In the Lower Section, wins
were reported by newcomer "Dizzy" Dean Betts,
Dave Eadie,
Don
"Scott" Norwood and Todd Essex. All results may be viewed
in
"Current Crosstable." Visit
the CCC Message
Board and speak to us!! All welcome new members Dean

Newton, Tapia Share Top Honors; Villone Wins Lower
Section of Pepperoni's II (Quick Ratings Tournament)
Charlotte,
NC 12-15-03: A cheerful crowd of 19
of the Metrolina area's hungriest pizza eating and beer drinking chessplayers
converged
upon Pepperoni's on Monday evening in order to participate in Pepperoni's
II.
This slightly less formal 3 round, G-29
event
was preceeded by a meeting whereby the "new"
CCC T-Shirts were
presented to various club Champions.
In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz"
Newton
(2004) dispatched of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1703), split the point with
co-winner, CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1517) and
finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (1913). Tapia clobbered
Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1982), drew Newton and bested Gary "the
Nuisance" Newsom (1983) to each score 2.5-.5
and pocket $30.
To view NM Leland Fuerstman's (2089) miniature vs. Dino PeBenito (Unr)
(See
Game 0360). In the Lower

(1059) clicked
off wins against the good Reverend James McKinley Williams (Unr), Algie

and win $30.
