NEWS & VIEWS 12-24-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton Wins Christmas
Money in Top!; Dadgar Wins "B"; Edward "C"; Hashemloo Lower Section of
Wendy's LI
Charlotte,
NC 12-23-03: A grand total of 60
of the Metrolina area's most avid chess dwarfs decended the chimney of
Santa's workshop more commonly known as Wendy's
in order to participate in the finale of Wendy's LI.
In the Top Section, winning
his unprecedented 32nd Wendy's Title!, the CCC's #1
player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2266) somehow survived
a busted middlegame (See Game 0364)
versus NM Daniel "I'm playing for a win" Liu (2040) and prevailed in the
Rooks vs Queen ending. Said Newton, "If he had offered me a Draw,
I probably would have taken it!" Nevertheless,
Newton scored
a perfect 5-0 and pocketed the $100Christmas
Bonus!
Clear 2nd Place with 3.5-1.5
was Dino "Marcos" PeBenito (1832) who, with 22 seconds left
versus the good Reverend Bernard "Bman" Baker (1859) requested
a clock with "5 second delay," thereby relinquishing his right to win?!
(I
did not know that!?)
In addition, NM Leland "Humbug" Fuerstman (2012) ditched
his Queen, but somehow still chopped down Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1756)(See
Game 0365). In the "B" Section, Danesh
"DD" Dadgar (1706) made peace with "Iron"
Mike Eberhardinger
(1697) to
take 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.
Meanwhile, Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1765) won a tough OCB ending
against S.C.'s Vijay Sethuraman (1675) and Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn
(1500) upset Robert C. Moore (1700). In the "C" Section, Kert
"the Other Side" Edward (1527) performed an exorcism on Shawn "Crusher"
Claitt (1310) to finish 1st Place with 3.5-.5.
In addition, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1525) split the point with
Jeremy
"Irons" Davenport (1577). In the Lower Section,
Hassan "HH" Hashemloo (1244) edged out the field with
3-2.
Other Lower Section winners were: Parandaman Medampalle
(Unr)
and newcomer Dave Eadie. All results may be viewed in
"Current
Crosstable." Visit the CCC Message
Board and speak to us!! Next Smokehouse Saturday,
1-17.

Newton, Tapia Share Top Honors; Villone Wins Lower
Section of Pepperoni's II (Quick Ratings Tournament)
Charlotte,
NC 12-15-03: A cheerful crowd of 19
of the Metrolina area's hungriest pizza eating and beer drinking chessplayers
converged
upon Pepperoni's on Monday evening in order to participate in Pepperoni's
II.
This slightly less formal 3 round, G-29
event
was preceeded by a meeting whereby the "new"
CCC T-Shirts were
presented to various club Champions.
In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz"
Newton
(2004) dispatched of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1703), split the point with
co-winner, CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1517) and
finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (1913). Tapia clobbered
Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1982), drew Newton and bested Gary "the
Nuisance" Newsom (1983) to each score 2.5-.5
and pocket $30.
To view NM Leland Fuerstman's (2089) miniature vs. Dino PeBenito (Unr)
(See
Game 0360). In the Lower
Section,
Sean
"the Villain" Villone
(1059) clicked
off wins against the good Reverend James McKinley Williams (Unr), Algie
"Crumpler" Clyburn (Unr) and Todd Essex (Unr) to score 3-0
and win $30.
Equal 2nd-5th were James "Sticks" Ulaky (Unr),
Todd
Essex (Unr), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn and Randy
"I'm not afraid of" Hight (1510) each with 2-1
winning $5.
(A
great time was had by all! Many thanks to Gary Newsom for his excellent
hospitality, and delicious pizza! We will do this again soon). To view
