NEWS &VIEWS 1-9-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton Wins Top; Munnell
Middle; Ashamalla, Filling Lower Section of Wendy's XLI
Charlotte,
NC 1-8-03: A
grand total of 53 of the Charlotte area's
most active chessplayers (excluding NM David Steele) terminated
at this factory of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Wendy'sXLI. In the Top Section,
the CCC's #1 active player, current
State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (4.5-.5)(2257)
massacred the helpless position of NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman
(2-3)
(2033) to capture his unprecedented 24th
Wendy's Title. Meanwhile, NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (3-1)
(2192) outlasted
Chris "the Babe" Mabe (3-2) (1887),
Deneil
"Sean" Brazell (3-2) (1805)
used kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1.5-3.5)
(1853), Michael Kliber (1-0)
(1916) clobbered "Deputy" John McCarthy (0-1)
[1900], and NM Daniel "Slechter" Liu (1-1)
(2000) shared the point with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2-3)
(2033).
In the Middle Section, Jonathan Munnell (4-1)(1453)
jammed the breaches of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1410) to take clear 1st Place
with 4-1. To observe two of Gatlin's
recents games (See Game 0283) and
(See Game 0284). In addition,
Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1660) deported Viktor "the
Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1602) and Danesh "Shah" Dadgar
(1602) riddled Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1452) while F. Mu (1675)
/Sztyber (1737), Eberhardinger (1616) /Baker (1567),
Gordon
(1644) /Johnson (1471) and Shoup (1451) /Brown (1479)
all ended in Draw. In the Lower Section, Alphonse
"the Fonz" Ashamalla (1371) beat Scott Duncan (804) to equal the
3.5-1.5
score of Travis Filling (Unr) who was defeated by 7 year
old phenom Joshua Mu (1217). Other Lower Section
winners were: Jim "Sticks" Ulaky,
Kevin Blackwell,
Ankit Jivan, Kevin Huang and Joe Shirlen. All results
may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."

Jurjevich, Mabe Share Top
Honors; Eberhardinger Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIV
Charlotte,
NC 12-21-02: A rather moderate
turnout of 18 indefatigable
chessplayers participated
in Smokehouse XXXIV. In the Top Section, which was
noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated
that the fear of losing was the reason), NM
Joseph
Jurjevic (2154) shared the point with Kenneth J. Baxter (1900) in Rd:1
before logging in victories versus Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1746) and Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2114) while Chris
"the Babe" Mabe (1886) drew Expert Tapia (2114) in Rd:1 then
defeated Robert C. Moore (1700) and Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) to share
=1st-2nd
with a score of 2.5-.5
and take home $75.
The Lower Section was dominated by "Iron"
Mike Eberhardinger (1600) who reeled off wins versus James
MacDougall (1696), Mark "Chessman" Johnson (1486) and the good Reverend
Bernard "JoeDon" Baker (1575) to score a perfect 3-0
and take home $80.
Honorable mention goes to Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1853) who
upset NM Fuerstman (2064) and Expert Keith Eubanks (1997) in Rds: 1
