    Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberia, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! We welcome your comments and contributions

Newton Secures 18th Wendy's Title - With 1 Round Left!; Gatlin Leads Lower SectionCharlotte, NC 1-9-02: Thirty-six of the Metrolina area's most ambitious chess energumens played their 1st round of the new year as they competed in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXXI. In the Top Section, invoking the "Fischer Rule,"  the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2233) split the point with 15 year old phenom, newly crowned Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2001) to lead the Section with 3-1; one full point ahead of his closest rivals. Also, in the Top Section, with the Black pieces, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2101) gunned down NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2002), David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1858) mildly upset Ralph "the Mouth of the South" Lombard (1881) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1886) drew with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1634) manhandled Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1601), Michael "Y" Shoup (1470) upended Danesh "Ayatollah" Dadgar (1472), Brandon "Starr" Brown (1491) turned the tables on Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1358), "CEO" Mike Isner (1436) initiated a hostile takeover of Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1457) and "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1675) shared the point with mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1757). In the Lower Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1265) defeated CCC Lower Section Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1286) to lead with 3-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Joe "Sticks Jr" Ulaky, SheilaBlackwell, Ankit Jivan and Reid Ward. Cunningham Sweeps Smokehouse XXII

Charlotte, NC 12-15-01: Fifteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse XXII. In the Top Section, a strong contengent from Greensboro led by NM Robin Cunningham (2268) and Mark Smith-Soto (2062) demonstrated their skills against a rather weak field of locals. Cunningham snapped off wins against Chris Mabe (1705), Patrick McCartney (1886) and Howard Hamilton (1471) respectively taking home $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5, Smith-Soto bested Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1675), yielded a Draw to NM L. Fuerstman and finally defeated Patrick McCartney pocketing $50. First Place in the Lower Section with 3-0 was Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1342) who won $40. Second with 1.5-1.5 was Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1469) who pocketed $20.
