CCC NEWS &VIEWS 10-17-02
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton, Mouzon, Fuerstman at 3-1 in Top; Gordon Perfect in Middle; Gatlin Lower Section of Wendy's XXXIX
Charlotte, NC  10-16-02: A reasonable turnout of 32 of the Metrolina area's most affable chess characters journied to this factory of tactitions more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXXIX. In the Top Section, each now with 3-1, the recently crowned North Carolina State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2226) vaporized Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1999), recently crowned National Master Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2215) out maneuvered NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and recently inducted into the NC Hall of Fame NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) used kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1835). (See Game 0265)  In addition, Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1780) bounced back from a pawn down deficit to defeat David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1825). In the Cruiserweight Division, Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1750) upstaged Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1776) and Frank "Moo" Mu (1726) topped Robert C. Moore (1700). In the Middle Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1635) remained a perfect 4-0 after proving malpractice versus Dr. Gerard "the Mad Pole" Sztyber (1626) though the post-mortem autopsy revealed otherwise. Also, in the Middle Section, Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1544) devoured Jerome "Cookie Monster" Debell (1653), Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1553) destroyed Danesh Dadgar (1637) (See Game 0264) and Michael "Y" Shoup (1451) split the point with Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1421). In the Lower Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1390) edged out Hassan Hashemloo (1101) to maintain a perfect 4-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Daryl "Wilkes" Booth, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Duncan McLaughlin, Ankit "Butch" Jivanand Tony Hicks. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." What, Me Worry?! Tapia Perfect in Top; Baker Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXII
Charlotte, NC 10-19-02: A rather light turnout of 18 die-hard chessplayers who did not compete in the S.C. Championship nor Raleigh participated in Wendy's XXXII. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason) CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom Expert Daniel "Alfred E. Neuman" Tapia (2109) dispatched of Scott Baldwin (1832) in Rd:1, Chris Mabe (1886) in Rd:2 and finally NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) to score 3-0 and win $100. Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were Fuerstman, Patrick McCartney, Chris Mabe and Deneil Brazell each winning $12.50. The Lower Section was dominated by the good Reverend Bernard Baker (1609) who defeated Duncan McLaughlin, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton and Hassan Hashemloo to score 3-0 and pocket $80. Equal 2nd-4th were Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton, Hassan Hashemloo and Jonathan Munnell each with 2-1 winning $13.
