In Memoriam: The CCC was saddened to learn
of the passing of Copeland Blackwell
Sr. A
kind and gentle person and a lover of chess, on occasion, 3 generations
of Blackwells would compete in the same event! Our condolences to the entire

NEWS & VIEWS 11-25-04
Rangarajan Leads Top; Sztyber, Lee "B"; Gatlin
"C"; Robason Lower Section of Wendy's LXI; New Starting
Time 7:30pm Sharp! (Players
who arrive late, or don't call, will be paired with other late entrants,
if possible)
Charlotte,
NC 11-24-04: A rather light turnout of only
22
of the Charlotte area's most avid Thanksgiving Eve competitors journied
to this "wild turkey" farm more commonly known
as Wendy's in order to consume their last cheeseburger for at least a weekand
then participate in Rd:3 of Wendy's
LXI.
In the Top Section, members of the CCC were honored to observe
a lively encounter between #1 and #2! The 2004 N.C. Co-State Champion
SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (2520) danced his King to the
fifth rank in an attempt to win the ending but was sumarily thwarted by
both his opponent and the clock! With little more than a minute remaining
for each player, the 2004 N.C. Invitational Champion NM Frankie
"Neutron" Newton (2282) agreed to the Draw allowing the still "undefeated"
Rangarajan
to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile,
Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2124) survived a serious altercation
with NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2035) which resulted
in perpetual check for either player, Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer
(2033) prevailed after a hard fought encounter with S.C. Expert Michael
"See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (2084), Patrick "Fabio" McCartney
(1961)
used kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1803) (See
Game 0438)
and the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1843) squandered
his advantage at time control and settled for a Draw against the good Doctor
Gerard
"the
Butcher" Szyber (1771). In the Middle
Section,
Laura
"Karate Kid" Lee (1698) backfisted Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1632)
to share the lead with Sztyber at
2-1.
In addition, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1613) got
revenge for the seige of Stalingrad with a victory over "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger
(1706) and Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas (1623) schooled Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1615). In the "C" Section,Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1532) made peace with Jim "Sticks"
Ulaky
(1658) to lead with 2.5-.5. In addition,
"Dr" Phil Whittington (1569) ground down Don "Juan" Hofer (1485)
and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1465) defeated Amanda Braband
(1552). All results may be observed on the "Current
Crosstable" Last Smokehouse CCC Christmas Party
