Fischer to Represent Iceland!
Charlotte, NC 12-11-04: According
to a traveller who just returned from Iceland,
a Reykjavik newspaper reported that Ex-World Champion Bobby
Fischer has applied for, and been granted
political asylum in Iceland. There is speculation that he may soon again
compete in international competition! |

area's most competent chess
aficionadoes participated in
Wendy's LXI. In
the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player,
(possibly the highest rated player
in North Carolina history),

"Rajah" Rangarajan (2520/16) quelled Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom
(1981) to capture clear 1st
Place with 4.5-.5
and pocket $100.
The 24 year old native of India works as a Computer Engineer for a major
firm in Charlotte. He has either won or shared 1st Place in every USCF
event in which he has participated except for one, still without a single
loss!! Meanwhile, the CCC's #2 player, the 2004 N.C. Invitational Champion

hung tough against Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2033) to finish clear 2nd
Place with 4-1
Drawing "Rajah" in their individual game. In addition, the good Reverend

(1843) relentlessly pressed the attack which ultimately ended as a 90 move

surgery by exchanging Queens and Drawing the good Dr. Gerard "the
Butcher" Sztyber (1771) and Michael

(1762) made peace with Clarke "Kent"

"B"Section,

"Karate Kid" Lee
(1698) split
the point with veteran "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) to take clear 1st
Place with 3.5-1.5
and Free Entry
into the next Smokehouse! In addition, Ankit "Butch" Jivan
(1617) overpowered Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1532), Jonathan "Henry" Hudson
(1632) was tripped up by Don "Juan" Hofer (1485) and Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1615) was upset bigtime by 12 year old Sean "Ashley"
Langston
(1220)
who had upset Gatlin (1532) last week! In the "C" Section, despite
the fact that he lost to Jivan, Winfred "Guns"
Gatlin's (1532)
2.5-2.5
was good enough for clear 1st Place (but not for Free entry into
Smokehouse where 3.5 is necessary). In the Lower Section,

order to participate in Smokehouse LVII. In the Top
Section, Expert

"the Babe" Mabe (2124) split the point with Patrick "Fabio"
McCartney
(1961) in Rd:1 and then registered victories over Expert Keith "Chuckie"
Eubanks (2058) and Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1981) respectively to share
=1st-2nd
Place honors with
Russian Grandmaster? Gennady Brazhnikov (1754?) who upset Eubanks
in Rd:1, Drew Matthew "Hoekstra" Green (1802) in Rd:2 and
survived a wild Rd:3 melee' versus NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman
(2035) whereby the latter player overstepped the time limit with a winning
position, each scoring 2.5-.5
and pocketing $75. In
the Middle Section, =1st-4th Place was shared
by NCCA Vice President Elect Randy "Wheels"
Wheeless
(1592), David "T" Richards (1637), Jerome "Cookiemonster"
DeBell
(1616)
and Ken "Kohloff" Ivens (1666) each with 2.5-.5
winning $37.50.
Equal 1st-2nd in the Lower Section was shared by "Dr"
Phil
Whittington (1569) and Don "Juan" Hofer (1485) each with
2.5-.5
winning $52.50.
