CCC NEWS & VIEWS 12-9-04

Rangarajan Wins Top;  Lee "B"; Gatlin "C"; McLaughlin, Robason Lower Section of Wendy's LXI; New Starting Time 7:30pm Sharp! (Players who arrive late, or don't call, will be paired with other late entrants, if possible).
Charlotte, NC 12-8-04: A grand total of 40 of the Metrolina
area's most competent chess aficionadoes participated in
Wendy's LXIIn the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player,
(possibly the highest rated player in North Carolina history),
2004 N.C. State Co-Champion, SM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (2520/16) quelled Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom
(1981) to capture clear 1st Place with 4.5-.5 and pocket $100. The 24 year old native of India works as a Computer Engineer for a major firm in Charlotte. He has either won or shared 1st Place in every USCF event in which he has participated except for one, still without a single loss!! Meanwhile, the CCC's #2 player, the 2004 N.C. Invitational Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton(2282) hung tough against Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2033) to finish clear 2nd Place with 4-1 Drawing "Rajah" in their individual game. In addition, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1843) relentlessly pressed the attack which ultimately ended as a 90 move K&Q vs K&Q Draw against NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2035), Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1961) survived a botched surgery by exchanging Queens and Drawing the good Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1771) and Michael "the Savage" Savage (1762) made peace with Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1803). In the "B"Section, Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1698) split the point with veteran "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5 and Free Entry into the next Smokehouse! In addition, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1617) overpowered Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1532), Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1632) was tripped up by Don "Juan" Hofer (1485) and Marty "Fritz" Katz (1615) was upset bigtime by 12 year old Sean "Ashley" Langston (1220) who had upset Gatlin (1532) last week! In the "C" Section, despite the fact that he lost to Jivan, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin's (1532) 2.5-2.5 was good enough for clear 1st Place (but not for Free entry into Smokehouse where 3.5 is necessary). In the Lower Section, Duncan "Doughnuts" McLaughlin and Justin "Daniel" Robason shared =1st-2nd Place with 3 points each. Other Lower Section winners were: Dave Mauney. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable" Last Smokehouse CCC Smokehouse Party December 18! Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to: lelandfue@yahoo.com
