CCC NEWS &VIEWS 2-22-01
By NM Leland Fuerstman
FLASH!! Effective Immediately:
New Time Control For All CCC
5 Round Events is: 30/1, G30

Newton Dominates Top, (Possibly With 5-0); DeBell Middle; Brown Goes 5-0 In Lower Section of Wendy's XXII
Charlotte, NC - 2-21-01: A new CCC individual  round record of 42 chess tournament practitioners first paid their respects to "old #3," and then participated in Rd:5 of Wendy's XXII. In the Top Section, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2216) holds a slight edge in his adjourned N vs B ending against NM John "Night-train" Lane (2100). Remarkably, Newton, with 4 points, didn't even need to show up for the final round in order to claim his 13th Wendy's Title! NM Daniel "Deep" Liu's (2000) final round Draw versus CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2114) left him with a score of 3-2, good enough for clear 2nd Place. Also, in the Top Section, David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1882) upset NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2026) while Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1961) did the same to Gary "Nuisance" Newsom (2020).  In addition, Clarke Brosi (1851) handled Jon "the Merchant" Pietras (1831) and MarqxScott (1858) Drew with Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1642).  In the Middle Section, Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1549) out-thunk Paul Lucas (1600) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-.5. Also, in the Middle Section, David T. Richards (1700) took out Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1611), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1497) handled Carl "the Truth" McKern (1505), Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway barely got by Mr. Samuel Christopher (1041) and "CEO" Mike Isner (1415) Drew with David P Jenkins. In the Lower Section, 14 year old Brandon Brown (1308) scored a perfect 5-0! with a Rd:5 victory over Danesh Dadgar (Unr). For his exceptional results, Brown takes home at least 1/2 of the $100 bonus provided by the CCC. Other Lower Section winners were: Ernest Sharif, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Joe Ulaky, Alphonse Ashamalla, Wendy Gatlin, Euphemia Mu, Daris McGhee Bey and Joe Shirlen. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Newton and Pohl Share Top Honors; DeBell Perfect "Again" in Lower Section of Smokehouse XII
Charlotte, NC - 2-17-01: Twenty-four real men disguised as chessplayers participated in Smokehouse XII. In the Top Section, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2202) dispatched of  Patrick "Goose-egg" McCartney (1961) and David "T" Richards (1700) before agreeing to a final round Draw with SM Klaus Pohl (2236) whose prayers to Caissa were apparently answered!  Pohl defeated fellow countryman Armin Burghart (2020) and CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122). Each won $75.  In the Lower Section, $100 cash was paid to Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1549) who has now performed back-to-back "hat tricks" with wins over D. Paul Jenkins (1608), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1195) and Marnzell Hand (1600). Tied for 2nd-4th with 2-1 were D. Paul Jenkins, Marnzell Hand and Jared Morse each winning $16.33. Five dollar "credits" were earned by F. Johnson, J. Ulaky, R. Morse, D. Dadgar, Joe Feiler & R. Hunter. Fuerstman Directed.
