NM John Lane Returns to Competition; CCC Tops 100 Members!
Charlotte, NC - 1-31-01: Thirty-two of the Greater Charlotte area's most competent calculators gathered at our "laboratory of chess science" more commonly known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to compete in Rd:2 of Wendy's XXII. A roar of applause greeted NM John Lane (2100) who's French Defense required little time to recapture his winning form versus Clarke Brosi (1851).   Another successful French Defense employed by NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2216) against NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2026) was adjourned but will probably allow the "Neutron Bomb" to remain perfect. In addition, Jon "the Merchant" Pietras (1831) also fell to a French Defense of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1961) while NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (2020) Drew. In the Middle Section, Greg "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1655) fell to Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1611), "CEO" Mike Isner (1415) handled Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1497), Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1602) bested Danesh Dadgar (Unr) and Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1549) has adjourned with David "the Bear" Griffin (1679). In the Lower Section, perfect scores were maintained by Brandon Brown (1308) who took out Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1211) and Euphemia Mu (1197) who survived against Don Norwood (727). Other Lower Section winners were: Frank Mu, Joe Ulaky,Jim Ulaky and Alphonse Ashamalla. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." All welcome new memberTodd Essex. Note: Please E-mail your games from Land of the Sky. Take a peek at my effort versus NM Esao Elezaj (See Game 164)

Newton and Fuerstman Share Top Honors; DeBell Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XI
Charlotte, NC - 1-20-01: Twenty-two real men disguised as chessplayers participated in Smokehouse XI. In the Top Section, NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton (2202) defeated Patrick"Flanker"McCartney (1929) in Rd:1 before being slowed by the "Dutch" Defense of NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2026).  A difficult Rd:3 victory over CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122) allowed Newton to tie for First Place with 2.5-.5. Fuerstman dispatched of Robert C. Moore (1750) in Rd:1 and Kenneth J. Baxter (1936) in Rd:3 (See Game 0162). Each won $75.  In the Lower Section, $100 cash was paid to Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1436) who performed a "hat trick" with wins over Steve Childress (1000), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1195) and "CEO" Mike Isner (1429). Tied for 2nd-4th with 2-1 were "CEO" Mike Isner, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky each winning $25. Fuerstman Directed.
