NEWS &VIEWS 2-6-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton 4-0
in Top; Baker 4-0
in Middle; J. Mu, Savage, M. Richards 3-1
in Lower Section of Wendy's XLII
Charlotte,
NC 2-5-03: A
rather substantial turnout of energumens who just couldn't get enough
converged upon our sacred temple of higher thinkers more commonly known
as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's XLII.
In the Top Section, just back from his triumphant campaign
at LotS where he defeated Grandmaster Julio Becerra (Rivero) (2572)
and finished =2nd-5th winning over $500,
the CCC's #1 player, current NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz"Newton
(2283) quickly dispatched of tyro Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1831) to lead
with 4-0. Meanwhile, NM Leland
"El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) repelled the French Defense of Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (2033) as mild mannered Clark "Kent" Brosi
(1870) initiated returnee to competition Jackie "Bman" Ryan (1867). In
the Middle Section, the good Reverend Bernard "King"
Baker
(1600), (4-1
at LotS), stayed perfect (4-0) after
a convincing win over Frank "Moo" Mu (1717), Dr. Gerard "the Butcher"
Sztyber
(1736)
performed a rather gruesome operation on Slobodan "The Mad Serb" Sinanovic
(1721), Dave "RichMan" Richards (1628) hand cuffed "Sherif"
John McCarthy (Unr), Brandon "Starr"
Brown (1491) fired "CEO"
Mike Isner (1566), Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1511) "made
his day" against Michael "Twist &" Shoup (1456), Daryl "Flash"
Gordon
(1700) shared the point with Danesh Dadgar (1591) as did Jim
"Sticks" Ulaky (1428) with Winfred "Guns"
Gatlin (1447).
In the Lower
Section, leader 7 year old phenom, Joshua "Moo"
Mu (1367) was
upset by Michael Savage (1335) while Mike Richards (1325)
defeated CCC Player Representative Alphonse "the Fonz" Ashamalla (1403)
to each lead with 3-1. Other Lower
Section
winners were: David "Grizzly"
Adams, Daryl "Wilkes"
Booth,
Travis
Filling,
Hassan Hashemloo,
Joe Shirlen and
Kevin Huang.

Mera Perfect in Top; Johnson,
Savage, Woods take Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXV
Charlotte,
NC 1-25-02: Two complete
sections of a total of 20
chessplayers from 4
different continents participated
in Smokehouse XXXV. In the Top Section, which
was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated
that the fear of losing was the reason), the pride of South America,
(FM) Angel Mera (2161)
posted victories against Robert C. Moore (1700), Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(1909) and NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) to score a perfect 3-0
and pocket $100.
Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5
was
Clarke
"Kent" Brosi (1846) who took home
$50.
Equal
1st-3rd in the Lower Section were Mark
"Chessman" Johnson (1491), Michael Savage (1360) and SSgt
Russell
Woods (1319) each scoring 2.5-.5
and winning $50.
