Out With Adjournments - In With Sudden Death as Wendy's XXIII Begins
Charlotte, NC - 2-28-01: Thirty-eight intellectual streetfighters first packed their chess programs away in mothballs and then participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXIII. In the Top Section, possibly because of the new time control, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2216) was only able to manage a Draw against the "lowest rated Master in the nation," NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). Meanwhile, CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2114) defeated Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1961), NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman exacted immediate revenge upon David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1882) and newcomer Armin Burghart (2020) defeated Clarke Brosi (1851).  In the Middle Section, David T. Richards (1700) skewered Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1488), "CEO" Mike Isner (1411) handled returnee to competition Richard Tomlin (1430), Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1611) schooled Ernest Sharif (1350) and "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1658) upset shooting star Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1642), the first victim of the new "sudden death" time control.  In addition, Gregory "Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1655) split the point with Paul Lucas (1600). In the Lower Section, wins were posted by Frank "Wheels" Johnson, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Mr. Samuel Christopher, Eric Melton, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Winfred "Windy" Gatlin, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Ankit Jivan and D. Paul Jenkins!? (He arrived late...we now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF). All welcome new CCC members Armin Burghart and Richard Tomlin. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Newton and Pohl Share Top Honors; DeBell Perfect "Again" in Lower Section of Smokehouse XII
Charlotte, NC - 2-17-01: Twenty-four real men disguised as chessplayers participated in Smokehouse XII. In the Top Section, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2202) dispatched of  Patrick "Goose-egg" McCartney (1961) and David "T" Richards (1700) before agreeing to a final round Draw with SM Klaus Pohl (2236) whose prayers to Caissa were apparently answered!  Pohl defeated fellow countryman Armin Burghart (2020) and CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122). Each won $75.  In the Lower Section, $100 cash was paid to Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1549) who has now performed back-to-back "hat tricks" with wins over D. Paul Jenkins (1608), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1195) and Marnzell Hand (1600). Tied for 2nd-4th with 2-1 were D. Paul Jenkins, Marnzell Hand and Jared Morse each winning $16.33. Five dollar "credits" were earned by F. Johnson, J. Ulaky, R. Morse, D. Dadgar, Joe Feiler & R. Hunter. Fuerstman Directed.
