Daniel Continues to Roll in Top; Logjam in Middle; Johnson Still Perfect in Lower Section of Wendy's XXIII
Charlotte, NC - 3-14-01: Thirty-one of the Metrolina area's most gifted and talented competitors gathered at our sacred Temple of Thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's  on Wednesday evening only to be pleasantly surprised by the appearance of two distinguished Grandmasters! Visiting from Cuba, thanks to the efforts of Gerbin and Pat Hoekstra, International Grandmaster Julio Becerra (2554) and his charming wife, Women's International Grandmaster Martha Fierro are currently employed as instructors for the CMSCA. These friendly GM's were welcomed to the CCC with a warm round of applause. In the Top Section, 2001 N.C. State High School Champion CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2113) prevailed in his encounter with Dr. Armin Berghart (2015) elevating his score to 3-0. Meanwhile, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2212) got back on the winning track with a decisive victory over David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1848) while suffering with the distraction of tables and chairs being banged about in between curse words as DavidT. Richards (1705) upset Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1962).  In addition, NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) split the point with NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2020).  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1587) got past Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1454) while "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1642) executed a brilliant conclusion versus Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1579). (See Game 0170)   In the Lower Section, Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1300) remained perfect after narrowly converting a Q vs R's ending against CCC Lower Section Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1302). (See Game 0169)  Other Lower Section winners were: Euphemia Mu, Jim Ulaky, Randy Hunter, Danesh Dadgar, Michael Ballenger, Brandon Brown, Michael Shoup and newcomer Terry Kelly. Honorable mention goes to Ernest Sharif  who captured clear 1st Place in the Under 1300 Section of the N.C. Scholastics Championship with a perfect 7-0! All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." All welcome new CCC member Terry Kelly. (We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF). See ya' at Smokehouse XIII - March 17!

Newton, Daniel, Burghart Share Top Honors; Keller Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XIII
Charlotte, NC - 3-17-01: A rather poor turnout of only one dozen chessplayers who could not care less about basketball participated in Smokehouse XIII on Saturday. Yielding Draws to Patrick McCartney (1942) and Justin Daniel (2113), NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton's  (2212) final round win over David T. Richards (1705) knotted him in a three-way tie for First Place with 2001 N.C. High School Champion CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2113) who had defeated Robert C. Moore (1750) and submitted to a final round draw with new addition Dr. Armin Burghart (2015). Burghart's Rd:1 Draw with David T. Richards and Rd:2 victory over Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1942) elevated him to the winners circle with 2-1 each winning $30. In the Lower Section, Lauren Keller swept the field with a perfect 3-0 to take home $60. Equal 2nd-3rd were Danesh Dadgar (Unr) and Michael Ballenger (Unr) each with 2-1 winning $15.
