NEWS & VIEWS 3-3-05
Newton, Baker Lead
Top; Brosi, Lee "B"; Ozherelyev "C"; Nichols, Alexander Lower Section
of Wendy's LXIV
Charlotte,
NC 3-2-05: A
slightly stronger turnout of 30 of the Metrolina
area's most creative competitors travelled to this temple of doom
more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's LXIV. In the Top Section,
the CCC's #2 player,
2004 NC Invitational
Champion, 2004 CCC Player of the Year, NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2292) snapped a pawn, defended to the hilt and bearly made the time
control versus NM Leland "El-Fuerte" Fuerstman (2000) to share the lead
with the good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1801) who
because of illness, requested and was granted a
half point Bye each with 1.5-.5. Meanwhile, 2004 CCC "A" Player
of the Year, Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2048) rattled off a loud
series of decisive moves
against Michael "Jordan" Kliber (1911), SCCA President James "Big" MacDougall (1889) outplayed Gary
"Sandbagger" Branton (1800) and Ken
"the Terrible" Ivens (1807)
split the point with Clarke
"Kent" Brosi (1762). In the "B" Section, 2005 Scholastic Team Champion Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1665)
beat down 2004 CCC "D" Player
of the Year Marty "Fritz" Katz
(1598) to share the lead with Brosi at 1.5-.5. In
addition, returnee to CCC competition Thomas Paradis (1745) made his day
against Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1712), "Sponge" Bob Moore (1713) handled 2005 Scholastic Team Champion Amelia
"Wheels" Wheeless (1630) and Jonathan
"Henry" Hudson (1607) made
peace with Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1606). In
the "C" Section, "B" player Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1621) unloaded
his "Kolashnikov" on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1483) to lead with 2-0?
(Whatever!?!) In addition, Don
"Trump" Hofer (1522) bested 2005
Scholastic Team Champion
Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1479)
while Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn
(1500) put a hard tackle on Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1499). In the Lower Section Ervon
"Wooden" Nichols (1206) and Joseph "Stalin" Alexander (Unr) each have 2-0. All
results may be observed on the "Current

Tapia, McCartney
Share Top Honors; Thiede Lower Section of "Billy's I"
Charlotte
NC 2-19-05: A small group of 16 happy competitors
surrounded by stock car memorabelia, reported to our new
location and participated in Billy's I.
Almost everyone, to a man, thoroughly enjoyed the
atmosphere, friendly
and professional wait staff and management, extraordinary reasonably
priced cuisine and modern design of the recently renovated facility.
(Playing in a completely silent, upstairs private room seems to be a
rarity around here ). In
the Top Section, =1st-2nd Place was
taken by the CCC's #3
player, 2004
NC
Scholastic Champion, 2004
CCC Scholastic Player
of the Year NM Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2201) who
just unvailed his new website at www.danieltapia.
com, posting his second tournament
victory in as many weekends with a Rd:1
victory over Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800), a Rd:2 rout of Matthew "Hoekstra"
Green (1881) and a Rd:3
grandmaster Draw with co-champion Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1941). McCartney tamed Jerome
"Cookiemonster" DeBell (1667) in Rd:1
and upset NM Leland "El Moron" Fuerstman (2000) in Rd:2. Each scored 2.5-.5 and
pocketed $75. In the Lower Section, 13 year old Eric-Henning Thiede (1358) scored 2.5-.5 and
carried home the 1st Place
prize of $60.
Equal 2nd-3rd Place with 2-1 was
shared by Donald "Trump" Hofer (1522) and Jeff McAdams (1537) of Greensboro
each winning $15.
To observe all results see (Crosstable). See you at Billy's II, March 19. |
