By NM Leland Fuerstman (Editor Needs Games, Send them, damnit!)
Newton Takes Lead in Top; "B" Clogged; Isner Leads "C"; M. Richards 3-0 in Lower Section of Wendy XLIV
Charlotte, NC  4-9-03:  Thirty-eight of the greater Metrolina area's most congenial competitors got jiggy with it and participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's XLIV. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 active player, current NC State Champion, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2290) over ran the forces of NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2194) to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2013) executed a trick opening move versus NC State Scholastic Champion, CCC Favorite Son, Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2124) and quickly Drew. (1 e4 e5 2 d4 ed 3 Nf3 Nc6 4 Bc4 Nf6 5 0-0 Ne4 6 Re d5 7 Nc3!!= Two pawns down and White hangs yet another piece!; actually, according to the book, it's an even position). In addition, NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000) split the point with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1967). In the Cruiserweight Division, Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1978) beat down Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1657). In the "B" Section, Bobby Waddell (1740) ditched a piece but ended up checkmating the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1695)  to each lead with 2-1 along with Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1675) who upset "George C" Scott Baldwin (1775). In addition, Frank "Moo" Mu (1703) defeated "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1703). In the "C" Section, "CEO" Mike Isner (1564) could only manage a Draw against Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1614) to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1538) schooled Joshua "Moo" Mu (1424), Michael "the Savage" Savage (1523) fouled the magazines of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1423) and the contest between Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1552) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1413) ended peacefully. In the Lower Section, "Iron" Mike Richards (1331) remains the only 3-0 in the tournament after defeating Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1294). Other Lower Section winners were: CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, "Dick" Tracy Davenport, Richard Tomlin, Hassan Hashemloo, Kevin Blackwell and Jonathan Roes. Moreira, McGavran 3-0 in Top; MacDougall 3-0 in Middle Section of Smokehouse XXXVII
Charlotte, NC 3-22-02: Two complete sections of a total of 21 chessplayers from hither and yon participated in Smokehouse XXXVII. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of many of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), NM Jairo Moreira (2339) ran off consecutive wins against Todd "Flowers" Trower (2021), NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) and Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2048) to score his second perfect 3-0 in as many attempts and pocket $75. Also finishing with 3-0 and winning $75 was darkhorse Jamie McGavran (1860) who registered wins against Patrick "Goose Egg" McCartney (2033), NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and Todd "Flowers" Trower (2021). In the Middle Section, James "Frugal" MacDougall (1728) notched wins against Michael "the Savage" Savage (1421), Robert C. Moore (1700) and Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1764) to file back-to-back 3-0's in Smokehouse competition and win $100. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5 was Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1570) who took home $50. To view complete crosstable (Click Here)(Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse April 19. See ya' there!
