NEWS &VIEWS 4-3-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Mouzon Leads Top; Baker "B";
Isner "C"; Richards, Jivan Lower Section of Wendy XLIV
Charlotte,
NC 4-2-03: Thirty-seven
Wednesday night warriors clicked off their propaganda boxes and
terminated at this sacred mosque of loyal subjects more commonly known
as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's XLIV.
In the Top Section,
NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2194) annihilated the ground
troups of NM John "NightTrain" Lane (2088) by sacking a Rook for 5 pawns
and winning a Bishop and pawns versus Rook ending to lead with 2-0.
Meanwhile, with a surplus of 23 seconds left on his clock, the CCC's #1
active player, current
NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2290) again
caused his opponent, NM Leland "El-Moron" Fuerstman (2013) to move rapidly
and blunder, converting a piece down loss into a spectacular win!(See
Game 0297) In addition, after a brief hiatus, CCC
Favorite Son Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia
(2124) won a difficult
Rook vs. Knight(s) ending over NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) while Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (1967) eeked out a Bishop and pawns ending
against Jackie "BeeMan" Ryan (1849) (See Game
0296) . In the
"B" Section, talking smack all
the way to the gallows, the pride of Man-ha-en, Deneil "Dashawn" Brazell
(1790) was humbled by the Good Reverend
Bernard "King" Baker
(1710) who
read him his last rights and now leads with 2-0.
Meanwhile, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1637) won a piece down melee
versus "George C." Scott Baldwin (1775), Daryl "Flash" Gordon
(1675) used his raygun on Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1538)
and Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1614) split the point with Bobby
Waddell (1740). In the "C" Section, "CEO" Mike Isner
(1564) savagely
beat Michael "the Savage" Savage (1478) to lead with 2-0.
In addition, Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1552) manhandled
upstart Joshua "Moo" Mu (1424) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton
(1413) played taps for Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1423). In the Lower Section,
Mike
"Keith"
Richards and Ankit "Butch" Jivan each lead with 2-0.
Other Lower
Section winners were: Glenn Bell, Kevin
Huang, Lee "R&Bman"
Richardson, Hassan Hashemloo
and Joe Shirlen. All results may be viewed in the

Moreira, McGavran 3-0
in Top; MacDougall 3-0
in Middle Section of Smokehouse XXXVII
Charlotte,
NC 3-22-02: Two complete
sections of a total of 21
chessplayers from hither and yon participated
in Smokehouse XXXVII. In the Top Section,
which was noticably absent of many of Charlotte's top players, (some
speculated that the fear of losing was the reason), NM
Jairo Moreira
(2339)
ran off consecutive wins against Todd "Flowers" Trower (2021), NM Leland
"El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) and Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2048) to score his
second perfect
3-0
in as many attempts and pocket $75.
Also finishing with 3-0
and winning $75
was darkhorse Jamie McGavran (1860) who
registered wins against Patrick "Goose Egg" McCartney (2033), NM Daniel
"Deep" Liu (2000) and Todd "Flowers" Trower (2021). In the Middle
Section, James
"Frugal"
MacDougall (1728) notched wins against Michael "the Savage" Savage
(1421), Robert C. Moore (1700) and Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1764)
to file back-to-back 3-0's
in Smokehouse competition and win $100.
Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-.5
was Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1570) who
took home $50.
