Sighting of CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas Produces Rare Photo; Wendy's XIV Begins

After proceeding to a secret designated area on an anonymous tip, this rare image of Paul Lucas was captured! Actually, the tarantula is one of the "pets" from Irwin Ave Elementary School where this author serves as the "Chess Instructor!" Pictured here are future masters of the IACC.Meanwhile, a total of twenty-nine of the Metrolina area's more ambitious competitors, exhibited no signs of arachniphobia and competed in Rd:1 of Wendy's XIV. In the Top Section, recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2202), coin-toss notwithstanding, successfully handled Ralph Lombard (1927) while 16 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2023) and NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) were nicked for draws by Patrick McCartney (1873) and David Jaap (1809) respectively.  In the Crusierweight Division, Jon "Infinity's End and Cigar's Etc" Pietras (1745) overpowered Slobodan Sinanovic (1543) while in the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1552) defeated Darrell Spencer (1399), Algie Clyburn (1533) whupped up on Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1354) and Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1323) was thwarted by "Iron" Mike Isner (1435).  In the Lower Section, wins were posted by Helton Clavijo, Sam Christopher, Timothy Ruffin and Daniel Tapia. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."  Special thanks to Patrick McCartney for acting as Asst. TD in my absence. LF

Burlington Yields Three Champions From CCC
The North Carolina Class Championships held in Burlington this past weekend witnessed CCC's very own Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1547) capture clear 1st Place in the Under 1600 Section with 4-1 winning $350! But, twice as much glory was enjoyed by Team Brown as they took care of business with Brandon Brown winning 1st Place in the Under 1200 Section and father Terry Brown winning 1st Place in the Under 1000 Section.  Congratulations champions! For the complete story see "Father and Son Strike Gold" on CCC Message Board.

Newton Acts Like IRS -  Seizes Cash; Brandon Brown Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse III
Twenty chess energumens (including 4 chessmasters) disguised as normal taxpayers forwent filing their income tax forms on Saturday, April 15 and instead participated in Smokehouse III.  In the Top Section, recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton (2202) refused to issue a deferment avoiding a final round draw versus frontrunner NM Leland Fuerstman (2084) to score 2.5-.5 and take home $100 cash. Equal 2nd-5th were NM Klaus Pohl (2222) (from Greenville, S.C.), NM Leland Fuerstman (2084), NM Daniel Liu (2000) and Patrick McCartney (1853) each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, Brandon Brown (1255) posting the only perfect 3-0 of the tournament also collected $100. Laurin Keller (1369), Joe Feiler (1079), Darrell Spencer (1364) and "Iron" Mike Isner (1435) each scored 2-1 and pocketed $12.50. Fuerstman directed.
