Wendy's XXIV Begins, With Some Astounding Results!
Charlotte, NC 4-4-01: Thirty chess players who had the guts to compete in local rated tournament competition without the "fear of losing" participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXIV. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2229) performed surgery on Dr. Armin Burghart (2015) while with the Black pieces, Wendy's XXIII Champion, CCC Favorite Son, NC High School Champion,  17 year old Justin "Phenom" Daniel (2118) handed NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2024) his first loss in many encounters.  Meanwhile, an astounding upset took place as NM Garik "Outlaw" Wells (2072) succumbed to the successful Queen sacrifice of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1942)  (See Game 0174)   Also, in the Top Section, NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2019) concluded his encounter with Clark "Kent" Brosi (1851) with a Queen sacrifice!(See Game 0175) And, an even more astounding upset transpired in the Cruiserweight Division as Brandon "Esq.Jr" Brown (1406) celebrated his graduation to the "Class C" category by outplaying "Class A" player David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1893), a 487 point upset! Also, in the Cruiserweight Division, with the Black pieces, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1768), possibly the "fastest rising player in the nation," (1,000 points in 1 year!) took care of David "Richman" Richards (1705).  In the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1576) took out "CEO" Mike Isner (1429) while Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1454) upset Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1512). Newton, Daniel, Burghart Share Top Honors; Keller Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XIII
Charlotte, NC - 3-17-01: A rather poor turnout of only one dozen chessplayers who could not care less about basketball participated in Smokehouse XIII on Saturday. Yielding Draws to Patrick McCartney (1942) and Justin Daniel (2113), NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton's  (2212) final round win over David T. Richards (1705) knotted him in a three-way tie for First Place with 2001 N.C. High School Champion CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2113) who had defeated Robert C. Moore (1750) and submitted to a final round draw with new addition Dr. Armin Burghart (2015). Burghart's Rd:1 Draw with David T. Richards and Rd:2 victory over Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1942) elevated him to the winners circle with 2-1 each winning $30. In the Lower Section, Lauren Keller swept the field with a perfect 3-0 to take home $60. Equal 2nd-3rd were Danesh Dadgar (Unr) and Michael Ballenger (Unr) each with 2-1 winning $15.
