CCC NEWS &VIEWS 3-29-01
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Daniel Is Champion of Top; Isner, Jenkins Middle; E. Mu Lower Section of Wendy's XXIII
Charlotte, NC - 3-28-01: Thirty of the Charlotte area's most gifted and talented thinkers converged upon our sacred temple of mental calculators more commonly known asWendy's on Wednesday evening in order to participate in Rd:5 of Wendy's XXIII. In the Top Section, N.C. State High School Champion CCC Favorite Son 17 year old Justin Daniel (2129) reeled off 4 consecutive wins before yielding a final round Draw to NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) to take clear 1st Place. (Liu did not lose a single game all tournament, nor did he win one with 5 consecutive Draws!?)  Finishing in 2nd Place with 3-2 was NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton (2212) who bested NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2030). Also, in the Top Section, David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1848) fell to NM Garik "Outlaw" Wells (2072), Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1942) lost the exchange and ultimately the game to Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1725) and Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1851) outlasted David T. Richards (1705). (In order to view McCartney's recent victory over NM Greg Samsa see Game 0173). In the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1576) handled Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1454), "CEO" Mike Isner (1429) took care of Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1300) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1512) upset Greg "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1646).  In the Lower Section, Euphemia Mu (1155) missed the first round but made up for it with 4 straight wins to take clear 1st Place. Other Lower Section winners were:  Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Ernest
Sharif, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky and Freddie Perdue. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." (We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF). All welcome new CCC member Gaurav Gupte.

Newton, Daniel, Burghart Share Top Honors; Keller Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XIII
Charlotte, NC - 3-17-01: A rather poor turnout of only one dozen chessplayers who could not care less about basketball participated in Smokehouse XIII on Saturday. Yielding Draws to Patrick McCartney (1942) and Justin Daniel (2113), NM Frankie "Fritz" Newton's  (2212) final round win over David T. Richards (1705) knotted him in a three-way tie for First Place with 2001 N.C. High School Champion CCC Favorite Son 17 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2113) who had defeated Robert C. Moore (1750) and submitted to a final round draw with new addition Dr. Armin Burghart (2015). Burghart's Rd:1 Draw with David T. Richards and Rd:2 victory over Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1942) elevated him to the winners circle with 2-1 each winning $30. In the Lower Section, Lauren Keller swept the field with a perfect 3-0 to take home $60. Equal 2nd-3rd were Danesh Dadgar (Unr) and Michael Ballenger (Unr) each with 2-1 winning $15.
