By NM Leland Fuerstman

"Outlaw" Bags 4th Victim; Millsaps Perfect in Middle Section of Wendy's XXV
Charlotte, NC 5-30-01: Thirty-four of the greater Charlotte area's most competent calculators abandoned their more important responsibilities and instead participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXV. Noticeably missing were NM W.F."Billy the Kid" Newton (2215) due to illness and CCC Favorite Son Justin Daniel (2145) due to studies! In the Top Section, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2079) took NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2019) to task as he squeezed out a win from a rather level position to lead with 4-0! Meanwhile, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1782) upended David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1887), NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2022) bested Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1895) (who took Top Class "A" at the U.S. Amateur South) and with the Black pieces, Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1975) dispatched of mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1849). (It should be noted that Gary Newsom just returned from competition in Charleston, W.V. where he captured clear 1st Place in the U.S. Amateur South Championship!) In the Cruiserweight Division, Jesse Liu (1850) bested D. Paul Jenkins (1591).  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1592) remained perfect after a convincing win over Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1524) while Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1602) outlasted Jerome"Bouncer" DeBell (1634). In the Lower Section, the lengthy winning streak of Danesh Dadgar (1252) was haulted by Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1418). Other Lower Section winners were: Randy "King" Hunter, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Ernest "Omar" Sharif, Cody Oyama, Ankit Jivan and Frank "Chessman" Johnson. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."  We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF).  Next Smokehouse Saturday June 9. Be there! (Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail)

Daniel, Burghart Share Top Honors; Lipkin Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XV
Charlotte, NC 5-12-01: Twenty-four week-end warriors from 3 states participated in Smokehouse XV. In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, NC High School Champion, 17 year old Expert Justin Daniel (2145) outplayed rising star 15 year old Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1748) in Rd:1 before being slowed by CCC's #1 player NM W.F. "Frankie" Newton II (2215) who split the point. The final round saw Daniel upset chess legend SM Klaus Pohl (2252) from Greenville, S.C.  (See Game 0179) Meanwhile, Dr. Armin "Hammer" Burghart (2018) got past Robert C. Moore (1728), Drew with SM Klaus Pohl (2252) in Rd:2! and defeated Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1895) in the final round to finish =1st Place with 2.5-.5 each winning $75. The Lower Section 1st Prize of $100 cash was taken home by Michael Lipkin (1500) who scored a perfect 3-0.  Equal 2nd-3rd were D. Paul Jenkins (1591) and Gil Holmes (1600) each with 2.5-.5 winning $25. Below 1200 Prize was shared by Samuel Christopher (1005) and Frank Mu (1045) each with 2-1 winning $15.
