Daniel Gunned-Down by "Outlaw," Allows Newton & Fuerstman to Tie for 1st; Brown Takes Middle, Dadgar Lower Section of Wendy's XXIV
Charlotte, NC 5-2-01: A grand total of 47 of the most competitive energumens in the Metrolina area abandoned their T.V. and computer monitors and instead chose to participate in Wendy's XXIV. In the Top Section, leader CCC Favorite Son, NC High School Champion, 17 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2120) was unable to hold off the relentless assault of NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2072) (See Game 0178)  allowing the CCC's #1 player NM William F."Bill" Newton II (2235) who defeated Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1910) and NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2013) who "upset" Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1769) (See Game 0177) to tie for =1st-3rd with 3.5-1.5. (Fifteen year old Daniel Tapia, who just returned from the Supernationals in K.C. finishing with 5.5 and no losses, must be the "fastest rising player in the nation." In less than one year he has gained over 1,000 rating points! doubling what Hoekstra achieved in his first year! ) Also, in the Top Section, David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1893) shared the point with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2028). In the Cruiserweight Division, Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1649) unable to secure the necessary amount of kryptonite, was routed by Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1846). In the Middle Section, 14 year old Brandon "Esq.Jr" Brown (1410) outdistanced the field with a final round Draw vs Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1512) scoring 3.5-1.5. Also, in the Middle Section, with the Black pieces Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1587) routed D. Paul Jenkins (1576) while Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1454) handled "CEO" Mike Isner (1429). In the Lower Section, Danesh Dadgar (1263) bounced back with a final round win against Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1249) to win the section with 4-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Derek Smith, Frank "Chessman" Johnson, Gaurav Gupte, Euphemia Mu, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Don Norwood, Joe Shirlen and Joe "Sticks.Jr" Ulaky. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."(We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF). Next Smokehouse May 12.  Be there!

McCartney Takes 1st In Top; Dadgar Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse XIV
Charlotte, NC 4-14-01: On the morning after "Friday the 13th," thirteen of the CCC's most brave attempted to shake off the effects of triskaidekaphobia and compete in Smokehouse XIV.  In the Top Section, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1915), in a curious lycanthropic manner, first went to the wire and Drew with NM Frankie "sans-Fritz" Newton (2235) before defeating Dr. Armin Burghart (2015) in Rd:2. In the final round, with an equal position, NM Daniel Liu's (2028) flag mysteriously fell while executing his 30th move!? giving McCartney a score of 2.5-.5 and winning $80. Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2013), who upset NM Frankie "sans-Fritz" Newton (2235) for an unprecedented second time in 4 days! and Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1769) who upset Fuerstman in Rd:1 each winning $20.In the Lower Section, Danesh Dadgar (1263) ruled the field with a perfect 3-0 winning $45. Equal 2nd-3rd were James "Sticks" Ulaky (1264) and  each winning $15. (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse 5-12.
