Fuerstman Takes Lead in Top; Jenkins, Stamatovich Middle; Johnson, Ulaky Lower Section of Wendy's XXVI

Also, in the Top Section, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1999) bested David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1847). In the Cruiserweight Division, Alex Stamatovich (1633) and "trainer" handled Marnzell Hand (1600) while D. Paul Jenkins (1605) upset mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1847) to each lead with 2-0. Charlotte, NC 6-9-01: Sixteen of the South's most notorious chess players including U.S. Amateur South Champion Gary Newsom  (who will compete tomorrow on-line for the U.S. Amateur Championship title) participated in Smokehouse XVI. In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2252) from Greenville, S.C. handled countryman Dr. Armin "Hammer" Burghart (2018) in Rd:1 before being slowed by NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2034) in the penultimate round.
