    Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberia, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! We welcome your comments and contributions

"Outlaw" Wounded, Still Takes Clear 1st Place in Top; Millsaps Middle; Dadgar Lower Section of Wendy's XXV - No Bonus Collected?!
Charlotte, NC 6-6-01: A new CCC record total of 63 of the greater Charlotte area's most active tournament chess players participated in Wendy's XXV. In the Top Section, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2076) took a slug from N.C. High School Champion, CCC Favorite Son, 17 year old Justin Daniel (2151) (See Game 0183) but still emerged with the best score of 4-1 to take clear 1st Place. Tied for =2nd-3rd were CCC's #1 player William F. "Billy the Kid" Newton II who defeated Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1791) and JustinDaniel (2151) who defeated Wells. Other Top Section Rd:5 action saw NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2034) and NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2022) split the point as did Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1962) vs. National Amateur South Champion Gary "Nuisance" Newsom (1975) and David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1847) vs. Jesse "Skip To My" Liu (1865). In order to view McCartney's recent encounter with NM Larry Tapper (See Game 0182)  In the Cruiserweight Division Greg "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1607) upset mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1841). In the Middle Section, vying for the $100 Bonus, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1592) was tripped up by spoiler D. Paul Jenkins (1591) but still ended clear 1st Place with 4-1. Also, in the Middle Section, "CEO" Mike Isner (1514) took out Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1524). The Lower Section was once again controlled by Danesh Dadgar (1252) who bested Ernest "Omar" Sharif (1355) in the final round scoring 4-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Frank "Chessman" Johnson, Winfred "Windy" Gatlin, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Timothy Ruffin, Brandy Chaffee, Cody Oyama, Frank Mu, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla and Brandon "Esq.Jr." Brown.All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."  We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! Pohl Captures Pole! Finishes 1st; Tapia Dominates Lower Section of Smokehouse XVI
Charlotte, NC 6-9-01: Sixteen of the South's most notorious chess players including U.S. Amateur South Champion Gary Newsom  (who will compete tomorrow on-line for the U.S. Amateur Championship title) participated in Smokehouse XVI. In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2252) from Greenville, S.C. handled countryman Dr. Armin "Hammer" Burghart (2018) in Rd:1 before being slowed by NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2034) in the penultimate round. (See Game 0184)  In the final round Pohl eeked out a win from a R&P ending versus CCC's #1 player NM Frankie Newton (2195) to take clear 1st place with 2.5-.5 winning $80. Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 and winning $20 were Newton who defeated Gary Newsom (1975) in Rd:1 and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1971) in Rd:2 and Fuerstman who defeated Jeff Rayfield (1867) in Rd:1, Drew Pohl (2252) in Rd:2 and agreed to a "Draw by Reputation" to Newsom in the final round. In the Lower Section, newly crowned Class "A" player Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1819) dismantled Randy "King" Hunter (1031), Michael Curcuru (1748) and Robert C. "Bob" Moore (1717) to score 3-0 and take home $80. Second were Moore and Rayfield with 2-1. (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse July 21.  See ya' there!
