Tapia Uses "Swiss Gambit"; Achieves Master Title With 2550+ Performance Rating at World Open!
Philadelphia, PA 7-6-04:  CCC Favorite Son, three time NC Scholastic Champion Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2159)represented the state of North Carolina in quite an extraordinary fashion after he took a half point Bye in Rd:1. He then realed off wins against IM Jay Bonin (2405), IM Mark Ginsberg (2435) and WGM Keteva Arakhamia- Grant (2452) before slipping against GM Alexander Ivanov (2623). Next, he Drew IM Nikolai Andrianov (2433), Lost to GM Pavel Blatny (2547) defeated Bruce Leverett (2337) and finally Drew 16 year old superstar FM Lev Milman (2472) to score 5.5 and take home Top Under 2300 honors and $2,300! The average rating of his opponents was 2463! His performance rating was a whopping 2556! And, according to the USCF Rating Calculator his new rating will be 2248! This should move him to the "Top 10" for 18 year olds in the Nation. Wow!! Congratulations Daniel. Keep up the great work!! 
Honorable mention goes to Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2069) who did not lose a single game, including a final round pawn down Draw versus a 2199, and finished =8th-18th in the Under 2200 Section with 6.5 winning $2,000. His performance rating was 2374 and his new rating should be 2124! Fantastic results, Chris! You are on your way to Mastery!

Tapia Takes Clear 1st Place at LPO!
Greensboro, N.C. 8-1-04: CCC Favorite Son NM-elect Daniel "Johnny" Tapia added yet another feather to his cap in Greensboro last weekend as he took clear 1st Place in the Under 2200 Section of the LPO with 4.5-.5 and pocketed $5,000. Other strong CCC finishers were Bernard "King" Baker =5th-7th with 3.5-1.5 in the Under 2000 Section, Michael "the Lip" Lipkin clear 1st Place with 5-0 in the Under 1800 Section, Frank "Moo" Mu and Michael "the Savage" Savage =2nd-6th with 4-1 in the Under 1800 Section.

 Wendy's LVIII Begins
Charlotte, NC 7-28-04:  A rather light turnout of only 23 of the Metrolina area's most avid competitors participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's LVIII. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, 2004 NC Invitational Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2264), playing the French Defense, surrendered a rare Draw to NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) after the 25th move (See Game 0407)Meanwhile, Todd "ChessNinja" Trower (2036) outclassed Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1992),Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2024) used the necessary amount of kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836)(See Game 0408) and former FIDE 2400 player from India, newcomer Karthik Rangarajan won a nice OCB ending against John "I am not a" Crooks (2008) to each lead with 1-0. In addition, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1820) turned the tables on Robert C. Moore (1700). In the "B" Section, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1612) outplayed Paul "the Survivalist' Lucas (1602) while Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1645) split the point with Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506). In the "C" Section, nobody other than Gatlin even bothered to show up!?! Hey "C" players!! Get your butts back to the CCC and compete...are you men, or mice??! In the Lower Section, John "the Mad Siberian" Grechka (1365) survived a lively melee against Ervon "Wooden'" Nichols (1133), Hassan "HH" Hashemloo (1079) bested Chang Sun (1261), Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1076) took out Hubert Song (1005) and Greg Song (966) defeated Amanda Braband. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable." Next Smokehouse Saturday, August 21.Good luck at the LPO this weekend. Bring home the gold!!! Upsets Abound as Trower Takes Top Honors; Overman Lower Section of Smokehouse LIII
Charlotte,  NC 7-17-04: A moderate turnout of 21 fierce competitors from North and South Carolina arrived at the Smokehouse with a vengeance! In the Top Section, Rd:1 upsets took their toll as SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2061) fell to Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1992), NM Leland "El-Slowpoke" Fuerstman (2026) overspent his clock versus Brian "Tiger" Woods (1678) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2024) was for the second time tripped up by 15 year old "Mean" Matthew Green (1659) (See Game 0406)Meanwhile, Todd "Chessninja" Trower (2036) dispatched of the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1820), Brian "Tiger" Woods (1678) and finally Drew with Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2069) to capture clear 1st Place with 2.5-.5 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-5th were Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2061), Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2069), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1997) and James "Big" MacDougall (1829) each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, Walter "Mitty" Overman (1661) 
registered wins against Paul Copeland (1191), Samual Xin (1076) and Jeff McAdams (1516) to take clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take home $100.
