and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. On this page, which is
continuously updated, we will report a weekly synopsis of the previous
meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting
anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. We welcome

Tapia Uses "Swiss Gambit";
Achieves Master Title With 2550+ Performance Rating at World Open!

PA 7-6-04: CCC Favorite
Son, three time NC Scholastic Champion Daniel "Johnny" Tapia
(2159)represented
the state of North Carolina in quite an extraordinary fashion after he
took a half point Bye in Rd:1. He then realed off wins against IM Jay Bonin
(2405), IM Mark Ginsberg (2435)
and WGM Keteva Arakhamia- Grant (2452) before slipping against GM Alexander
Ivanov (2623). Next, he Drew IM Nikolai Andrianov (2433), Lost to GM Pavel
Blatny (2547) defeated Bruce Leverett (2337) and finally Drew FM Lev Milman
(2472) to score 5.5 and take home Top
Under 2300 honors and $2,300! The average
rating of his opponents was 2463! His
performance rating was a whopping 2556!
And, according to the USCF Rating Calculator his new rating will be 2234!
This should move him to the "Top 10" for 18 year olds in the Nation. Wow!!
Congratulations Daniel. Keep up the great work!!
Honorable mention goes to Expert Chris "the Babe"
Mabe
(2069) who did not lose a single game, including a final round pawn down
Draw versus a 2199, and finished =8th-18th in the Under 2200 Section with
6.5
winning
$2,000.
His performance rating was 2374
and his new rating should be 2124!

Newton Leads Top; Jivan "B"; Ozherelyev "C"; Katz

Charlotte,
NC 7-7-04: A moderate turnout of 30
of the Metrolina area's most diligent problem solvers
recovered from their 4th of July celebrations
and participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's LVII. In the Top
Section,
the CCC's #1 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, 2004 NC Invitational
Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2249) yielded a rare
OCB Draw to Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2069) to lead with 2.5-.5.
Meanwhile, NM Leland "Premier- Hombre" Fuerstman (2026) exacted
a certain measure of revenge for Pearl Harbor as he counter-attacked and
destroyed David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1817) (See
Game 0404), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1997)
outplayed Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2023) and the good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1800) was tripped up by Jonathan "the Enforcer"
Munnell
(1769)(See
Game 0402). In the
"B" Section, Ankit
"Butch"
Jivan (1639) squeeked by Jonathan "Hornet" Hudson (1467)
to lead with 2-1. In addition, Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1630) schooled Jonathan "the Mad Siberian"
Grechka (1406) while David "the Bear"
Griffin (1645) split
the point with "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1665). In the "C"
Section, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1594) turned
the tables on Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1555) to lead with 2-1
while
Winfred
"Guns"
Gatlin
(1472) bested Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1183). In the Lower
Section,
Marty
"Fritz" Katz (1354) defeated Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1143) to lead
with 3-0.

of Charlotte registered victories over Kenneth J. "Beans" Baxter (1900)
and Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1997) before agreeing to a GM Draw with Expert
Keith
"Chuck" Eubanks (2079) of Columbia, SC who dispatched of Brian "Tiger"
Woods (1643) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2026). Each scored
2.5-.5
and pocketed $75.
In the Lower Section,Josh
"the Law" Lawson (1310) of Greensboro took clear 1st Place
with 2.5-.5
winning $60.
Equal 2nd-3rd were Matthew Greene (Unr) and Jacob
